I just bought a 1994 F-250 diesel yesterday. I dont really know anything about them.He did stress that you need to leave it plugged in overnight and it will start right up in the morning ,or on a cold morning when it is freezing.
I did not plug it in last night,it did not freeze but got down into the low 30's.I left the glow plugs on for 30 seconds the first time ,cranked it for 30 to 45 seconds and it wouldnt start. Then I left the plugs on for 60 seconds and cranked it for 60 seconds and it still wouldnt start.
Any suggestions as to what kind of a problem I might have.He said once it is warmed up that it will always start right up.Hopefully I will not have an expensive bill to get this fixed. Thanks for any and all responses.
In 1994 there were three diesel engines offered by Ford.
7.3 idi normally aspirated
7.3 idi with factory turbo
7.3 di PowerStroke Diesel
The factory turbo idi and the PowerStroke were both badged TURBO DIESEL - the PowerStroke badging did not come out until 1995. The PowerStroke was only offered in 1994 with the manual transmission so if you have an automatic you have one of the first two engines. If you have a manual tranny it could be any one of the three.
We need to know what the engine is before we can really give you any help.
Thanks for replying and for helping me.I really appreciate it.
It is a ( 94 F250 XLT Turbo Diesel ).It has a 3 speed auto with an overdrive that you click on or off on the right side of the steering wheel.I tried starting it 2 other times today and it had to be at least 40 to 45 deg. out .I live between Seattle and Portland.Anyway, I left the glow plugs on for 60 seconds and cranked it for 60 but it didnt even try to fire.I'm not close enough to my garage to plug it in yet .The other owner didnt say you had to plug it in,in this weather,I thought he only meant the freezing weather. But,he did say that if it has been plugged in that it will immediately start every time. Thanks again for your help and suggestions.I've always wanted a truck of this body style and year.Hopefully it will not cost a ton more to get it fixed.
you have an IDI factory turbo, and your problem should be somewhere in your glow plugs or relay, have them checked out or wait for someone to chime in with instructions on how to do them yourself.
I had an IDI before my powerstroke and i kno that engine inside out. depending on the mileage of the engine the injector pump may be worn out that was my prob. But your best bet would be to change all 8 glowplugs and the relay to start with. My old IDI needed a pump at 153,000miles. after that with all new GPs and relay that truck would turn over in under 2 sec on a 20 degree morning. Make sure when u go to start when cold under 40 u should hold pedal to the floor and anything over 40 when engine is cold hold it half way down. you will find out what the engine likes eventually. 2 Brand new batteries and a good strong starter is also a must have with an idi. Any more info you need jus lemme know.

Thanks a ton for everybodys reply and assistance.Unless somebody else thinks my problem could be something else, it kinda makes sense that it would be the glow plugs and sensor. The 2 times that I went to see the truck was in the morning and he said it had not been started yet. But,it had been plugged in all night. It only took 1 to 2 seconds to fire off.I guess the other thing that I did wrong was I did not press on the accelerator hardly at all.I would guess that was why I couldnt get it to start today. Thanks again
