Cold Starting !

OKay guys, I've already own a f-250 7,3 idi 1991, But for some reason it never started during winter.

I had glow plug controller problem with it so it was normal i guess, but still it was plug in, i was boosting it with 2 car and shooted several time some ether ( quick start thing for starting diesel when really cold ). It was about 0 F (-17 C).

My mechanic told me that those engine where reputed for having trouble getting cold start... ANyway, no i'm about to buy a another diesel truck, and this one will have to take me to my hunting camp and i live in quebec canada, so for us 30C under zero (-22F) is call normal and at my hunt camp there no electricity.

So my question is what is the coldest cold start story you ever heard of with a 7,3 l idi ? what should i expect from a good and well prepared for winter motor.

Also i'm looking at some cummins first gen 12v 5,9l turbo diesel truck, would those have less problem with cold start ?

When on youtube a saw a couple of cold start vids, but alot of them where plug-in, i'm really looking on info when it's not plug, when you dont have electricity ! thx

Use WD-40 instead of starting fluid. The great thing about diesels is they will ignite just about any petrol product. It LUBRICATES the cylinders, not DRIES them like ether. So its a lot safer and better to use.

As for reasons its starting cold... dude, its a diesel. The thing is a heat monster. Id like to know but I dont think there is anything you can do other than plug it in, use glow plugs, or park it over a fire (kidding about the last one). And I say those things in general diesel terms.
