This is my first post and could really use some help. I have a 2007 Ford F350 with a power stroke turbo diesel and a 6speedautomatictransmission. Sometimes while taking off from a stop the transmission has a high whinning sound and the engine races but will not gain speed. If I stop and go again, it usually stops. Now it will not shift into overdrive while driving on the open highway. Changing the tow switch on the shift lever from off to on does not make a change in operation. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the forum. Has any work or modification been done on the transmission? Changed out tranny fluid? Have you installed a tuner? I sure ain't a transmission man, But from diligent reading of this forum I know these are salient issues. Keep checking back. here are others who can help you. Are you there Mark???
Thanks for the reply. No there has been no work or modification done to the transmission. All fluids and filters have been changed according to warranty specs. What surprises me is that both problems just started around the same time and without warning. I am hoping it is just a sensor or minor adjustment to get it back functioning correctly.
Your transmission is the 5R110W. It is a 6 speed transmission (technically) but only uses 5 forward gears at a time. (It's complicated). It is an excellent transmission with a great track record.
Have you checked your fluid level? Was the proper fluid (Mercon SP or Mercon LV) used for the last flush? When was that done? How many miles are on the transmission?
I recommend getting it scanned for codes. The next step after that is to use the same high end scan tool to monitor data from the computer and transmission. In other words, it's really not a do it yourself diagnosis. It takes a lot of knowledge and expensive equipment to understand what's happening.
