cab removal

I want to thank you guys for the input on removing the front end of my 56-f-250 it was as easy as it was explained i had it off in about a hour and a half. Thats with dealing with a lot of rust also. So I was wondering what does it all take to get the cab off?? Pics are coming soon.

I pulled my cab a few days ago. I didn't want to mess with taking out the glass, etc if I didn't have to.

And two days ago I pulled the cab off my 55 F100. I actually had a friend help me lift and carry that one. The cab was fully stripped, and much lower than the F500...so we were able to lift it with our hands.

I left the chains hooked up in the 56 cab so most likely I will use the engine lift rather than muscle to place that cab on its new home (frame)...it was super easy with the picker.

I removed mine with a cherry picker also, similar to the link above. The biggest problem was getting the cab over the steering column shaft. There are only three options for that,
1. raise cab several feet to clear the column once the steering wheel is removed,
2. remove the steering gear and column from the frame. It is hard to re-install.
3. remove part of the column like was done in the link above.
If you are changing to an aftermarket steering column, i would recommend #2.

If you go with #2, you can lift the cab easily with four people and walk it forward and off the chassis. I put my cab back on like this using neighbor and our wives to lift and position the cab over the chassis.

why is it hard to re install the steering column ?? can't you just undo the stearing box from the frame and tie rod end?

I didn't think it was that difficult. The biggest pain is getting the steering arm bolt loosened. Was easy on my F100 (recently rebuilt)... but every bolt on my F500 was rusted tight. I'd say more than half the bolts on the F500 needed to be cut off, or simply broke off.

So, for the F500, I slipped my cutoff wheel into the split-groove in the steering arm and cut the bolt. Twisted the bolt, cut some more, etc. Then gave the bolt some torque and it snapped off.

The steering shaft on the F100 I pulled through the hole in the floor so I didn't have to mess with the steering wheel.
