cab removal and home built jib crane

First a question, best way to remove steering column? got steering wheel off with 3 rachet straps and a few hammer taps.

Jib crane, lifted front of truck with me on it so figured about 750lbs??

only wanted abut 1000 and don't see too much need for more. About 8 feet of reach and 180 degrees of rotation should make cab and bed removal fairly easy this weekend.

sometimes building tools is as much fun as tearing into the vehicles. Pretty sure This will get used fairly often and beats trying to roll in and out and use a tractor to pick loads

That's a lot better than what I used. I took my cab off in an 18th century barn by rigging antique wooden pulley blocks to an 8X8 and lifting the cab up high enough to roll the chassis out and away. I've since learned that it's easiest just to call in three strong friends and muscle it on and off the frame.

Last century, I took the cab off of my '46 Chevy pickup by lever an fulcrum. I built a frame with appliance rollers on the bottom to hold the cab so I could roll it back and forth in the small garage to get access to the chassis so I could clean and paint the chassis. The frame was 2x4s and it worked very well. I lifted one side and slid the dolly under it then the other side the same way.

And I too noticed the ceiling height as I scrolled down on the picture. I'd put a roll up door in there so I could have a lift.

Later!

Yeah, shutter style door, lift, a/c, 4 more bays, and a sugar momma to pay for it all...

rusty48 That is a nice set up. I did not have that kind of height so I made my lift outside, When I re-installed cab, I did it with just the beam cantilevered out the window. I found out the cab only weighed 300 lbs

I had to lift my cab higher then normal. I could not get my steering column out, so I had to raise cab high enough to get over the column.

I use the cherry picker with a welded up lift arm. unfortunately I don't have any photos. Usually when I have my setup working I am all alone and want to get the cab back on the ground before something bad happens.... lol

I lifted mine rather high as well to clear the steering shaft. Don't know why I just didn't remove it first. I chalk it up to a rookie mistake since this was my first time doing this. I have removed a second cab and it was much easier without the steering shaft.

If I could have removed the shaft, I would have. But the only way was the shaft had to come out the bottom, and I could not get the whole truck up high enough.

I used scaffolding frames, 4 in. rigid conduit, and a comealong.
