So my 68 has idiot lights for voltage and oil pressure. Ive found a few gauge clusters from 71 and 72's that have actual gauges instead of idiot lights. Can these be retrofitted into my 68. Wiring is my strongpoint so that doesnt worry me. Just wondering if they work before I buy one and find out its money wasted.
Can't find a 68 gauge cluster with gauges? The 70-72 have a plastic printed circuit with a big wire plug on the back, the 68 has a small plug with a wiring circuit. You will have to cut both plugs and splice the 70-72 into your 68. The 70-72 will fit into your dash. Find a wiring schematic for both trucks and match up the wires. Check fleabay. I found a few with gauges there. Also, some guys here are using these type of gauges from the bigger Ford trucks. (550, 650, etc) They are a bolt in but you will need to rewire. 1967-1972 Ford Truck Dash Round SW Styled Gauges Rare | eBay
Say you bought that clust on eBay. It has no plug, correct? So are you basically screwed if you buy that one on eBay if you can find both plug ends from that year truck?
Before you do any rewiring read this.....https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...-question.html I don't want your truck to catch fire! If you do the swap from idiot lights to gauges you will need to swap the oil and water sending units also.
If you can't find a correct plug in, you may have to check out the local pick a part or check the ads here. Some one here can steer you in the right direction for what you need.
That panel on ebay is certainly sweet but $199 is a bit steep! What I did was scour ebay for a used instrument cluster from a big truck (F400 and up I think) they will fit fine and have round gauges. As was mentioned earlier you need the correct sending unit.
Mine had a black coating on it which I removed with some paint stripper and then spent some time with steel wood to shine it up.
Many, many years ago, I've had my truck for 40+ years, I cut holes, with a hole saw, on each side of the speedo, in the dash and added mechanical oil pressure and temp gauges.
I bought one in the local junkyard for $20 and instead of putting it in my truck...I sold it on fleabay for a nice profit. Still kicking myself over that one.
I have two both from 70 models that use the printed circuit. They look identical on the cab side but use different wiring plugs as the circuit pattern is routed different. Wiring is my stumbling block. I,d say get the wiring plug to match the dash.
If my memory serves my right the alternator has an extra wire on it for the idiot light to work I don't know if that would need to be addressed..

Oh yes I went to all after market gauges. love the electronic adjustable speedometer if changing tire size. For yrs I put up the the speedometer arm bouncing around that was so oh so common with age and the ga. voltage regulator..I got some 1/8" alligator surface plastic from a place called Tap Plastic and cut to size cut out the holds wired it up with a plug I have manual water temp & oil gauges the rest electric..

1970 F100/350 & Econoline: The printed circuit is 1970 only, and there are two different types: With/without gauges.
The ICVR (Instrument Cluster Voltage Regular - C9AZ-10804-A / Motorcraft GR-512) is 1970 only for F100/350's and Econolines.

1971/72 F100/350 & 1971/74 Econoline use the same printed circuit, but again, there are two different types.
The ICVR used in 1971 (D1AZ-10804-A / Motorcraft GR-513) was used thru 1979 in F100/350's, Econolines & Bronco's.
