Now Transmission Problems

I pulled the engine out of my 78, leaving the tranny in, pushed it out of the garage, and put a motor back in 2 weeks later. I start the truck and everything is fine, put it in gear and the engine gets load like its in gear, but when you give it gas it won't move. You can run it through the gears and everything feels like it is engaging fine, but the driveshaft won't move at all, so something must be locked up, but I don't understand what because I didn't touch the trans at all. The trans is a c-6, any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm stumped.

Thanks,

Nick

Yeah, I checked all the obvious. The only thing I can think of is if the torque converter isn't all the way in, anyone know what that would do?

sounds like your torque converter. push on the torque converter and rotate it back and forth. there should be two or three clunks as it seats.

Can you move the truck by hand? Sometimes the E-brake will seize or just the brake shoes themselves will stick in the drum.

I've got a 74 w/390 & a C-6. My brother in law changed the motor in it befor I got it. He pulled the motor with the coverter still attached. When he stuck the converter in he only got it in half way. He then forsed the motor to the bellhousing. The truck started and ran fine but would not shift into gear.We un hooked the cooler lines and nothing came out with the truck running.

You can also check and see if you have slack between your converter and flex plate with the nuts off. Should be about 1/4 to 3/8 inch movement. If there is none then you more than likly broke you front pump. Good luck andI hope this helps.

If you had to draw the tranny and engine together with the bell housing bolts it's because the torque converter slipped out of the pump in the tranny. The engine and tranny should come together without forcing it. What I do is get it close enough to start a couple of bolts then wiggle the engine (or tranny) back and forth until it drops together. If it doesn't go there's something not right.
If that's what happened, the pump gear gets split when the torque converter is pressed in. Sorry to say but the best way to fix that would be to pull the tranny.

It does sound like the TC is not fully set back, if you pull the engine or tranny, inspect the flex plate as this caused mine to break.

They can form a small crack around the bolt area and then later crack completely.

I have disconnected my lines and it is moving fluid, that means my front pump is fine right? If I don't figure anything out, I'll pull the trans and check it out when the weather gets warm.

Well that pretty much says the converter is on right and the pump is working. I would tend to lean toward the brakes being seized. Maybe jack it up and try to spin the wheels as Torque1st suggested.

It was pushed out of the driveway, and towed around the yard so I think that rules out the brakes. I'm going to try jacking it up but I don't think its a problem. You would normally see the driveshaft move some when putting it in and out of gear and I have put the transfer case in neutral and still nothing.

Thanks,

Nick

Might be the rear end, could be easily seized. I doubt your tranny is the problem because you have fluid movement and it appears to be engaging.

I am thinking broken ring gear or pinion or maybe seized axle.

Hate to say it but the pump gear in the tranny could still be cracked and put out enough fluid to pump out of the cooler line but not build enough pressure to drive the tranny.
If the truck moves by pushing it, that rules out stuck brakes.
If the driveshaft isn't spinning but not going anywhere, that pretty much rules out the rear end.
I'd say it's either in the tranny or the transfer case.
