hey, I own a ford explorer, eddie bauer edition, 1996. I thought I heard somewhere that I could get some fancy air filter and it would boost my horsepower and give it better gas mileage. Any truth to this?
There are a couple of companies that make open air filter kits for Explorers: K&N, Mac, and KKM. You did not mention whether your Explorer is a 5.0 or a 4.0.
You will get better air flow through an open air system, for the simple fact there is less restriction for air to get in. You can also modify your factory airbox and it will help also. The debate is ongoing thoughout many members as to whether you get any performance gains from them. I personally do get some gains, but do not believe you get any significant gains as far as horsepower goes from a kit. But they do sound nice!
Both my brother in-law and I both have 97 Explorers with v8's I added a K&N Filterchager cone from Performance Products. Worked so well that my brother in-law also put on his. Gas mileage went up, and the truck ran much better. Also added the solid sway bars and Elderbrock shocks, handles curves MUCH better.
I have a '97 Explorer EB with 4.0L SOHC. Only had it for 3 weeks now, but put a K&N filter in it after the first week and noticed an immediate difference in throttle response. Can't verify mileage increase because I only had it a week before I put the K&N filter in.
I'd be willing to try one myself for the preformance and/or mph gains, but not a loud (read obnoxious) truck. I tend to prefer quite, smooth, peaceful transporation
hey i have a 94 and i have drilled the airbox to the point of swiss cheese (i'm suprised it holds together) but i was wondering if anyone knows of a open air sys for the 94's. it's a 4.0L but i havent even seen one for a ranger. i could make one but the bends are killer to match the factory tube.
kev100,
I just put in the K&N filtercharger replacement filter in the stock airbox, so the sound is just the same. It's not the high performance intake kit. I've read about very mixed results on performance increase with the high performance intake kits (not just K&N, but other manufacturers too).
Thanks Krax.....I think I'll get one sooner than later.
It will easily pay for itself over the life of the truck (disposible Frams alone cost about $6). If it adds milage and performance too....a no-brainer.
THe sound of he K&N is a nice throaty sound. It is not too loud. The Explorer is my wife's car, so if noise was a problem I would have heard about it! I also put one on my 300M. The Explorer seemed to be more air-starved than the 300.
The gas mileage goes up because the truck is not constantly downshifting.
Do not go for the drop-in filter as the gain is almost minimal. The guys on my 300M site tried the drop-in and converted to the Filtercharger.
Yes, they do need to be cleaned and oiled. You can gum up your injectors if you go crazy with the oil.
