My water temp/oil temp split is getting pretty wide and I was wondering if anyone has done the "Bulletproof" EGR Cooler and external Oil Cooler mods on their truck. The cost for the kit is pretty scary, especially since I need a round EGR Cooler. What kind of price would I be looking at if I went back with OEM coolers? They've been pretty reliable for 123K miles. Thanks.
I installed both the oil and EGR coolers... Love not having to worry about the oil cooler getting clogged any longer. It's expensive yes, but I did not want to have to replace either one again, so I dove in did it myself. Seeing threads lately about popped oil coolers makes me even happier I spent the extra $.
The OEM oil cooler can be purchased for about $215 + shipping. Install will be quite a bit more. I recommend you do it before you pop an oil cooler or melt your standpipe.
Can I get a second on this? I don't think I've heard it before.
I won't say they NEVER need replaced, but they are a LOT stouter than the square ones and very rarely fail. If you're not blowing white smoke then the cooler is fine and it's NOT that hard to pressure test while you have the intake off to replace the oil cooler.
The round ones were the inspiration for the BPD egr coolers. They are built totally different then the square coolers. They lack the solder that fails because they are welded. If it hasn't failed by now it won't on its own.
just get a regular oil cooler. its been redesigned anyways for better flow and as long as you keep your maintenance up ie: oil changes and coolant flushes you will be fine and can go for a super long time!!!
I did the bulletproof oil cooler. It was just piece of mind thing. I work at a dealer and fix cars all day I only wanted to fix mine once. The bulletproof kit was an easy way to guarantee that. I also did a BD diesel egr delete mine is an early built 04 with a round cooler. They make a very nice product with great instructions and tech support plus 3 extra quarts of oil in the system doesn't hurt either.
