A fellow driver friend broke down. Egr cooler n 3 injectors. The friend of mine didn't know anything about the 6.0, so asked me to talk to the shop. The guy said that he hasn't had many issues with oil coolers and didn't think it needed changed. After pretty much arguing for a bit, and me telling him the oil cooler and egr cooler should be changed together, he said he would do it. The friend didn't have any gauges so he had no idea what his deltas were prior to breaking down. Yeah, I know,,,, no gauges????? Wow. But, the friend did get an egr delete. So the friend called them and double checked that he's getting an oil cooler. The shop then said $800 to do the oil cooler. That sounds kinda steep since he's already into it. Oh we'll, I think the total was 2800 for 3 inj, egr delete, and an oil cooler. Don't you all think if the egr cooler failed,,,, change the oil cooler?
Yes anytime the egr cooler fails I would replace the oil cooler, not only because it could be caused by the oil cooler but also the work involved is required to change both.
I guess so,,, I just thought the oil cooler at 800 while doing injectors and the egr delete was kinda steep. But in the big picture, he didn't get hurt huh??? Parts should have been about 1500, so 1300 labor, yeah, not too bad. I'm just so used to doing stuff myself.
Were the injectors on the same bank or different banks? That makes a huge difference. An oil cooler as well as EGR delete? I'm sorry but that's a bit of work right there.
It was separate banks. I asked if he had to open both sides. It's about 600 just to open them huh? It was supposed to be be between 2200-2500, at least that's when I got off the phone with him. Oh well, he might have paid a bit too much, but it could've been much worse. He will survive. I told him today that now he can save up for studs (in our line of work). He might have lifted heads right now, who knows how hot he got it on the breakdown.
One thing on the cost he was working I take it.
So if you add that in (Time = Money) he may
did not have a lot of time to go fishing for a
better price. When you need some thing NOW
it can cost more.
14 hours labor for egr cooler/oil cooler and flush
6 hours labor (3 perside)injectors
2 hours diag.
thats 22 hours before we get in to parts.
Don't we always back each other up?
Okay, if we're doing this job ourselves and remove the labour cost out of the equation, how much time is it taking someone who doesn't wrench for a living to do this job? Is that time costing you more money in down time?

im sure at leat once we had a different opinion... i just dont recall it.
real time for me to do a set of sticks and coolers is a full 10-12 hour day. ive done hundreds of these too.
but real time and labor time are not the same either
