Ok, so my gear selector is stuck all the way at 1st gear. I can select other gears, but the selector always shows 1st gear. I am pretty sure I'm going to have to pull the dash off, which Ive never done before. I really don't want to pull this thing off if this is not really repairable. Someone has got to have had this happen before. I'm thinking this might be one of those things you can only fix with junkyard parts, but I'm hoping I'm wrong. My employees keep sticking the truck in 2nd gear and driving it on the highway and in 25 mph zones. I'm afraid this is going to nuke my newly remanufactured transmission.
Have the same issue. Tell your employees to smarten up 3 gears down is drive. Not hard. If the tranny doesn't shift engine revs too high your in second. Explain this to them show them the difference if need be. No need to blow a transmission over something so stupid. I believe the only way to fix it is to replace the instrument cluster. If you get it working let me know how as I would like to fix mine aswell.
Pull the steering column shroud close to the dash and you should be able to see the little cable that works the shift indicator. The inner cable hooks on to a spud on the shift tube and the outer cable has a little plastic tab on it that is held to the dash by a screw. Check that the plastic tab is not broken, the screw is in place and tight and that the inner cable is not broken.
If the inner cable is broken you will need to pull the instrument cluster forward enough to remove and replace the indicator assembly.
Yeah, I know on the counting the gears, Ive told them multiple times and been with them when they have been driving it around in second. Ive never had this problem, but they do. Good, intelligent help is hard to find these days, how do you not notice the engine screaming? Wish these had a tachometer, but ford counted on a little intelligence being present in the operator. Thank you for the tips on checking the cable Lazy K. I will do!
