Gear shift indicator
There is a plastic collar around your steering column; you have to remove one screw from the bottom side of the column that holds the collar in place, and remove the collar. After removing it you should see a small plastic cable with a metal piece on the end, this cable is supposed to go from the right side of the column, under it, then a small screw will hold the metal piece to a slotted area in the column. The slotted area rotates with the gearshift assembly; as you lower the lever towards manual 1st gear, for example, it pulls the cable upward and moves the indicator needle toward 1st.
Sometimes the plastic sheath on the cable breaks and gives an inaccurate reading. It works just like a bicycle brake cable, if the outer sheath is damaged then it won't work right.
FWIW mine hasn't worked in months, I got tired of messing with it and with it telling me I was driving in neutral, so I just left it unhooked lol.

Carpenter is about ten bucks cheaper with shipping. Just bought new assembly two weeks ago. And No, they don't sell just the cable and housing!!! Grrrr!!! You have to spend nearly eighty bucks for a complete assembly which you will have to remove the instrument cluster to install. I spent awhile looking around including searching this site and that the best I could do.
