Today i replaced my instrument cluster lights. When I put everything back together i noticed my gear shift indicator is off and I cant shift into 1st or 2nd. What did I screw up?
Could be that the shift indicator cable assembly got kinked or broken during the repair. First thing to do is look underneath the dash and check to see if the problem lies in the cable adjuster "thumbwheel". (While you are under there, you should also tighten the 2 screws that hold an "L" shaped cable bracket in place). See: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...s-in-park.html
If the cable adjustment wheel & plastic housing are OK, then you're gonna have to take the instrument cluster off again to check to see if the cable is pinched off somewhere, or if the problem is in the gear indicator itself, etc.
Thanks Rockledge. I adjusted the thumbwheel which seemed to line everything up again. The brackets were good. Still not getting into first.
I did notice the white clip at the tip of the cable going into the indicator came out and I thought I got it back in correctly. The cable was still connected. Is there a certain way the white clip sits in the indicator?

I'm not sure that the white clip is meant to be disconnected from the gear indicator "box". It might be OK that they got separated and you put them back together, but that is not the recommended way to disconnect the cable assembly from the instrument cluster.
When I replaced the indicator cable assembly on my Ranger, I found this video to be helpful. The part about replacing the gear shift indicator cable assembly starts about 4.5 minutes in.
The video was very helpful! I removed the assembly and reran the cable to where it attached under the dash, adjusted the wheel and all is well.
Many thanks!
