265,000 miles 5.4L - Would You Buy It?

This was owned by a corporate company all hwy miles of course and lots of them. What would you offer for it or would you walk away from it.

One owner of course and car-fax checks out good.

Thanks for any replies.

My own 5.4 in an E250 has 256K miles, bought it with 208K on it already when acquired. I paid a price in line with the mileage and despite it having a salvage/rebuilt title. For me the running gear are relatively easily changed components of the whole vehicle--the body's soundness and absence of rust is much more important IF I plan on keeping it.

Test driving the truck will tell you a lot---maintenance record too if they kept any. The general condition of the interior too; Excessive wear and tear on seats and carpet. Do the doors open and close with that solid thunk or are rattles obvious? Any unusual smells? General condition of the body and paint---numerous dents, rock chips, obvious signs of body work? (This is a bit tough if you're not a bit familar with body repair as I am-once owned a body shop)

The truck in your link has been detailed to death which can be quite misleading. Slick, glossy and nice smelling doesn't tell you a whole lot---go drive it first, 10>15 miles on various roads if you can.

Car Fax to me is still a bit uncertain as there is so much that could be done with it ever making its way to whatever records they supposedly serach compiling their results. Its good as far as any thing occuring that would affect the title. Same thing with Kelly Blue Book prices--too many things not taken into consideration but dealers find it useful to low ball trade ins. (FWIW most buying & selling businesses have "blue books" of some sort, all serving the same purpose.)

Anyway hope that gives you something to go on----just remember its merely my opinon and just like feet some of them smell!

Thanks for the reply JWA. Ya I am going to go look at it today and can tell as well it has been detailed well especially under the hood.

It was corporate owed and seemed to have been taken in periodically for preventive maintenance.

I would be planning on keeping so if the body and interior are not in a nearly excellent shape i most likely will not get it.

How is this figured out? "price in line with the mileage" I can get it for $9000

How much do engines cost for a vehicle like this? Would anyone know?

Thanks

I'm guessing the $9k price would be what I'd expect to pay for a later model IF its otherwise in overall great shape despite the mileage. Of course there's nothing wrong offering $7K cash on the spot if you're in that position. Drive it first othewise trying to negotiate beforehand puts them off (typcally) since you've not yet inspected the truck. You probably already know that though....

Long block engine would be about $2800 not including core but having it installed is where the bigger dollars come into play. Ask specifially about any towing---a transmission might be next in line to need attention. Fluid/filter changes, whether it was ever flushed or the torque converter drained and refilled per Ford's recommendations. Not sure what that trucks year and model used for a transmission so not sure of the replacement cost is. My '00 E250 with the 4R70W is about $1800 retail remanufactured with 12 month warranty--I'm sure the '06 F150's used a different transmission.

Anyway once you get it home let us know----would love to know the outcome even if it doesn't follow you home!

I got a 2v put in for $3800. I have the manual transmission that is in pretty good shape. In addition to The engine I got a new clutch kit installed. Didn't cost much more. I would be worried about the automatic.

Ok, I went to go look at it and it's in awesome condition. Drove it, sounds good but might have a lack of power, just not sure never really driven a 5.4 L. But it sounds good.

So there was an engine light on and the used car lot people said they haven't gotten around to figuring out why the light was on.

I went out to the dealership where it's been getting service and they remember the truck but said further diagnostics needed to be done.

It was taken in because it was running rough so they retarded the cam or something. Sounds like they may of thought it was a cam phaser problem but yet it could be engine based problem.

So if I can get an engine for $2000 and someone to put it in for about $1500 I will probably be right at bluebook or over. I then would have to worry if the tranny and if that would be next.

They car lot will not budge from $9200. But if a new engine was being put in that should change the blue book on it as well I would think. I am just not certain what the blue book value is, $11500 seems a little low if you ask me.

Anyways that's the scoop on that 2006 f150 crew cab..

Yes I see your point about the auto trans. It is a gamble. First make sure you feal that the trans is shifting as it should. Then maybe you could work out a deal with the dealer to do a complete trans service. Flush and filter change for free. Just make sure you get some paper work. I felt more comfortable buying an older manual trans rather than a auto.

Too much price for that.

It worth $7K with engine issues.

I had 99 F250 with 5.4L it had over 250K miles so coolant ate alum head.

I bet dealer bought that from auction for like $5000-6000 dollars.
