guys, went to go to work today and everything was normal.... did two cycles with the wait to start light, when it went out the second time i went to start it....it just cranked, the rpm wasn't registering at first.... but after a third attempt it WAS REGISTERING..... the wait to start light WOULDN'T come back on. i checked all the fuses and found number 9, a 20 amp blown and i swapped it with another in the box, went to cycle the key again, WTS was back on but my buddy saw smoke right from the fuel bowl area....looked more toward the passenger side.... so i turned it off and took the toyota for work...
from search, most say fuse 22 blows with the heater but mine was number 9 (fourth down on the left side of the big maxi-fuses below the diode)
Fuse 22 powers the PCM relay coil.
Fuse 9 is the PCM relay contact power.
Smoke is not good .. sounds like the IPR or its wiring has shorted as fuse #9 also powers it and is the only thing down by the fuel bowl that could smoke.
IPR is on the backside of the hpop, just to the drivers side of the fuel bowl down a ways. It's got a wire connector on it and a tin nut on the backside. The ipr is the brass colored deal about in the center of the picture with a black plug on top of it
Check the connector where it plugs into the IPR. More than likely the insulation on the wires are melted and shorting .. diesel fuel .. and you will need to tape or replace the connector.
IPR connector was all melted, but couldn't get one locally, so i just stripped the wires back, packed elect. tape in the connector, soldered it all back together taped each separately, all is good so far, fired up good, no smoke, and replaced the 20 amp fuse
