It's been my experience that coils are either good or bad and nothing in between, I have a feeling that isn't it.

That and the lack of any misfire codes really does not point to the Coils being bad.

If it has been raining there I would say you have water in some of the plug holes, especially the back 3 on the drivers side.

Maybe it was a bad connection and you cured it when you changed the coil (and any other related parts). I'v never seen a coil work just part time.

nope, it would work fine for a week then the next week start missing again. took them out cleaned them up because the connections were bad at the top of the spring. worked for about another week then started missing again. its very possible and the first place i would look.

i just had this problem with mine, it was intermittent and after changing plugs and boot, changing all the coils is what fixed it for me. after 173k miles it was due.

FYI, if you buy the Motorcraft coils, they come with boots. i wish i had known that, i wasted $50 on boots alone.

To the OP. If you have 100k++ miles on your Ex and are still running all the original coils then I would defiantly suggest (as some other posters have) that you change out ALL of them (coils and boots). Go with the Motorcraft for sure. You can get some deals on eBay if you look. The coils (COP's) do degrade over time and I would say that changing them should be part of the preventative maintenance for engines with over 100k on them. Also, if you haven't done the plugs in a while it would be good to do them at the same time as well.

I got a set of 8 coils from Rockauto for $350 shipped, last week. I think they had a 15% off sale going. I only got 8 because I had already replaced 2 during the diagnostic process.
