Sputtering X
 

Hi all,
The X just started to sputter, After I change the Plugs and Fuel fileter it got better but after I picked my daughter from school it started again but not as bad... I was thinking maybe its bad gas but dunno yet, I added seafoam to see if that would clear it up but not yet.

Any advice folks??

Bad coil, maybe?

It's a very slight sputter and hesitation and very noticable when reversing @ idle speed!

I just replaced the PVC but no luck!

Wouldn't a bad COP produce a very noticeable hard sputter?

Sometimes a bad COP could be intermittent.

Did you replace your rubber boots on the plugs? Do you notice the sputtering after it rains?

I replace 5 of the 10 gonna see if I can do the other 5 tomorrow... then I'll go to the COPs.

It just started Tuesday no rain for the majority of the week!

No check engine light? When you change the boots - make sure you use dielectric grease on the coil and plug side. I also put a bit around where it seals against the valve cover and the electrical connection.

No check light... I changed the boots today!

Clean the IAC. Assume the sputter is at idle after starting?

Replace all the boots then get back to us. Cops should be OK, don't waste your money.

Replaced the remaining 5 boots and start her up still sputtering.
Cleaned the IAC with throttle body cleaner still sputtering.
Used Seafoam in the vaccum (let her smoke it out) and so far so good.
Also added Seafoam in the throttle body for safe measure!

Will monitor it for the weekend and post an update!

What I've done so far:
Added Seafoam in the gas tank.
Changed the spark plugs.
Changed the Gas Filter.
Change COP boots.
Clean IAC.
Applied Seafoam throttle body cleaner in the throttle body.
Applied Seafoam to the Vaccum system. <--- So far so good!

Clean IAC. - Did you remove it to clean? Any idea on the fastener size?

Applied Seafoam to the Vaccum system. Where did you send the Seafoam into the vacuum system?

i'm betting a coil...ask me how i know.

i replaced all mine with ebay specials and its been great ever since. mine was also intermittent before i went ahead and replaced all of them.

I was having the same problem just last week. Read thru all the posts to see if I could come up with an idea. Read one about low battery output. Checked mine and it was a little low. Replaced the battery and I haven't had any sputtering issues since. Hope yours is an easy fix as well.

Yes I did remove the IAC to clean it, it took about 5 minutes to remove.
Its a 8mm.

There a new Seafoam spray just for the throttle body.(it comes with a small 1' straw)
I removed the 2' air intake tube then spray it in the little holes on the flaps.

I added the Seafoam via the Brake booster line.
I cut a water bottle in half, dried it really well.
Pour the contents of the Seafoam in there.
Start your truck.
Remove the vacuum line on the brake booster and stick it in the bottle.(the truck might stall just restart it till your are finished with the Seafoam)
When you are finished with the Seafoam, attach the line back to the booster and turn off the truck for about 5 mins.
Start the truck in a well ventilated area and let the smoking begin...


I will monitor it tomorrow and see if that's the fix.

Hook up a scan tool to it. Remember that these are not OBDII vehicles. Misfires may or may not light the CEL, but will still set a code. Both times that I had a misfire mine did not turn the light on but there was a code set. Hopefully it will be a cylinder id misfire code, i.e. P030x, where x is the cylinder #. O'Reilly auto will let you use their scanner for free in the parking lot if you leave them your drivers License.
