I feel my converter is going out, was up under the truck today with it running and noticed im getting a rocks rattling in a tin can sound, coming from the converter area. Ive had the inspection cover off a few months ago and there wasnt any loose stuff in there.
I am having a problem not sure if its related but when it shift into one of the higher gears and if im not at a high speed my truck seems to get a vibration right as it shifts, and goes away after a second or two.
Now im wondering how long I have till it goes out, any way to tell how long I have?
Anyone able to recommend a reasonable priced torque converter for me to install? Im also wondering about using a psd one, ive been told its possible but I need to drill out 2 additional holes in the flexplate due to the IDI being 4 bolt and the psd being 6 bolts.
i just fixed my crossover pipe and put it back on and now i have a really loud noise coming from the engine compartment it all most sounds like an n/a thats striat piped but the noise goes away at 1500 rpm and sounds like normal i can hear the turbo when i rev it i hope you guys can help me cause this is driving me nuts thanks

Well got to work on the truck tonight but before I got very far the noise got a lot worse. Found that the flex plate is either broke or something. I pulled the cover plate and can move the flex plate while the crank does not move.

IMPORTANT. DO NOT USE 6.9 flywheel or vibration damper on 7.3 or vice versa. If components are intermixed, engine vibration and premature component wear may be encountered. For identification, compare these part numbers.
Vibration damper 6.9 1805414C1
Vibration damper 7.3 1809117C1

'93/'94 7.3l factory turbo engines also have their own flexplate fyi.

But yeah I'd get another flexplate or you'll just keep having problems.
but im not saying it's not the TC either.just don't rule out the flexplate first is all.
Replacing mine today. Pretty common problem me thinks. Mine seemed to shift and drive normally just noise, especially at idle. Finding a replacement is the trickier part. Ford discontinued them some time ago. I found a replacement at a wrecking yard 4 hours away. Took me longer to get the replacement then to R&R the thing.
First off, can the flexplate be seen when the access plate on the bottom of the tranny is taken off?
ever since i got my truck i have heard a kind of howling noise coming from under the tranny tunnel in the cab. the noise is only really noticable when i am cruising at whatever speed and then take my foot all the way off the throttle and coast.
I now have a wierd shaking when i come to a stop. the best way i can desrcibe it is, it is like a front brake rotor is really out of round, i know it is not that though b/c i don't feel a single thing through the brake pedal.
Does these two things sound like the torque converter and or the flexplate?

I couldn't see my flexplate from the inspection cover. Can't say what the howling sound is. Mine was definitely a metal/bag of marbles sorta sound.
my torque convertor went out on my bronco and it did the same thing u r talking about, the vibration til u get to a certain speed and then it would smooth out, waiting for it to break is not the best descision, i tried that and it had vibrated so bad that it loosened the bolts on the transfer case and cracked the extension housing going down the road and lost third gear so learn from my mistake and fix it while its just the torque convertor.
