55 f350 electrical problem

1955 Ford F350 --took it to a local shop to replace center bearing in rear differential -- when I picked it up, they said had had trouble starting it -- I just put a new battery in a few months back, have had 0 problems with starting (started on a dime before I took it in there) -- also lights aren't working, whereas they were before -- what did these guys do? if they left the key on, had to jump start it, reversed polarities by accident, would this create these kinds of problems? any other ideas? thanks

I assume it's still 6v/(+) ground? Yeah, they could have just worn it down trying to start it and jumped it wrong. Check the battery terminals for signs of booster/jumper cable clamps.

Check everything Ross suggested. It could be, but I doubt it with all of the symptoms you mentioned, a bad main ground. Check your main ground strap, maybe by raising it on a hoist the strap got jostled. Maybe the ground strap connect was on the verge of not having a good connect and the movement pushed it over the edge. Grounding is a funny thing, especially if you have a 6 volt system.

On the HAMB board there was a discussion a while back about finding a shop that would work on an old car. A couple of shop owners wrote in to say they refuse to work on old cars because everything on an old car is old with old parts and by messing with one part you can inadvertently jostle another part without knowing it. It could just lead to a chain reaction of failures.

I started having problems just like this out of the blue. No crank, no lights, etc. I replaced cables, ground on the parts of the frame where the grounds connect, all that good stuff. thought sure I had it fixed, and it acted up again. in frustration i wiggled the positive cable at the battery terminal and she turned right over. I pulled the cable and sure nuff, the post and inside of the connector had a nice layer of oxidation. now i carry a 1/2 wrench and if she gives me any trouble, i just pull the positive, cable give it a wipe, put it back on and vaaRROOOOMM. ok, it's more like chug chug chug but you know what I mean.
