Code 626 and 629 what are they reffering to?

so i just pulled the codes off my 95 ford F150 5.0 automatic..

code 626; coast clutch solenoid circuit fault
code 629; converter clutch solenoid circuit fault or lock up solenoid circuit fault

reason i pulled the codes was because the truck has been shifting rough, can't drive it on the freeway because it wont shift after second.. :/

anyways, i just need to know what this is referring to and if anyone could point me to any charts or diagrams.. whats a good manual for this truck? where are this solenoids located.. etc..
thanks in advance!!!

I know its been a decade, but did you ever get to the bottom of this issue? I have had the 626 code for years and the trucks runs fine until you put it into drive Just need to know if solenoid is accessible from outside. Cannot find location of it.
I love the help this forum offered you (NOTHING AT ALL)! Transmission advice from technicians won't happen (they want $$), and most mechanics know very little about them.

Solenoids are inside the trans but I believe they are accessible with the pan removed.
What year is your truck and what trans does it have, E4OD or 4R70W?

Hi, Thanks for your reply. Its a 1993 with E40D. I did swap the solenoid pack years ago. Ran OK when cool weather, but here in Vegas, when hot, it ran like it was running on 6 cylinders when accelerating. Engines runs great in neutral/park. Under load, its like I advanced the distributor 5 degrees.
Always get the 626 code (coast clutch solenoid circuit fault). Cant remember if that solenoid was in the pack installed.
I am leaning toward transmission replacement.
I only use this for picking up stuff from Home Depot or runs to disposal yard. Not a daily driving machine.

Connector problems are common with these, it would be worth it to very closely inspect the solenoid pack wiring and connector pins closely for damage and corrosion.

That may or may not fix this. The problem could be a bad solenoid, but in my experience, the problem is usually a fault in the wiring harness between the PCM and the trans. A new trans won't fix the wiring.
