To time it right you need a meter. If you line up the mark on the pump and the one on the gear cover, it will be close enough to start and run to take it to someone who has the meter. You can time it by ear, meaning when it is cold and you first start it, it will have a "powerstroke" rattle to it untill it warms up and the timing advance kicks off. When the advance kicks off it will run a little quieter.If you don"t hear the rattle when cold, advance the pump by turning the pump so the line moves towards the passenger side. Do all timing adjustments with the motor not running. You do know the correct way to change out the pump don"t you? Do NOT remove the timing gear cover.
