Hi I have a 91 f250 with the 7.3 and lately it is getting very hard to start unelse it gets cooled down completely. Just about every thing I have read here says its probably the ip. The truck has 157000 on it and don't know if it is the original 1 or not. I did a serch on here about how to change it without having much luck so I was just going to ask the question about do you think it is the ip? Any special tips or tiricks to change it and how about timing it figured I would just try to mark it and get it as close to where the old 1 was if all else fails but would like to get it timed right. Thanks.
It sounds as if you are on the right track with the pump. To change it out isn't tpo hard.
there is a cover plate on the front of the timing gear cover held on with 2 bolts, remove that and inside you will find the pump held to the timing gear with 3 twelve point 5/16 bolts. REmove those. The pump is held to the timing cover with 3 9/16 nuts remove those.I have just removed the fuel lines from the pump, but others say to remove the lines from the injectors and remove the pump and lines as one unit. You should be able to take the pump off. Install in reverse order. There is a line scribed in the pump body and on the timing gear cover, line these up to get it in time close enough to start. I usually end up with the line on the pump a little towards the passanger side of the line on the timing gear cover. You want a little of the powerstroke rattle when running cold. I probably left something out, and someone will chime in. Hope this helps. Tom
