How much should I run it

I have a question. It is a waste of time for some of you who drive their 6.0 all the time.
Question, how much do I "need" to drive the truck to keep the systems operating good?
I don't run this truck very much, and since all the updates/repairs have been made I drive it even less. I got the truck with the idea of pulling a car on a trailer, and tools. This is not happening because of my daughter has me on the go all the time.
The truck just sits, and sits, don't want to short trip it all the time so it sits some more. Have a charger on it,but it might get driven 1 time every month.
I have saw posts where the turbo has had issues because of the truck not being used. I have tried to sell it but no luck because of people just are not buying as many toys right now, along with the 6.0L scare, and then you have the something for nothing crowd. It can sit,and go to bits b4 I give it away.
I don't understand how people flock to the Dodges with over 100,000 miles and pay over 20K. Its still a Dodge, and I have owned one.
Sorry for the rambling thats just me...

The best advice I can give you is drive it once every other week or so, get it up to temps and run it a little hard to exercise the turbo. I can tell you from experience that letting it sit is no good. I had the turbo cleaned once, rebuilt once, and now the center section had to be replaced...all becuase I let it sit.

I am going to make it a point to drive it now. A little background for you about me I am a chief in the fire department so I am provided a truck to drive all the time, I own/operate my own repair shop so I have a plow truck/shop truck I drive most of the time, and my 6.0 is my "nice" toy truck, when it gets used it works though atleast 5k in it all the time, so I definatley dont use it enough.

My warranty runs out 2/28/12 so I told the fire department I need to drive my truck more to ensure anything else wont go wrong. So thats what I will do, probly only on the weekends but its more than I usually drive it.

In 4 years when my tour as cheif is done it will be my daily driver. It will be short trips, but I will have to make it a point to exercise my turbo too.

Lesson for me practice what I preach. Dont sell it....DRIVE IT!!

YES! Drive it! Mine sat for ~18 months after I bought it while I was in the Middle East. I came home and started driving it, a LOT. Not more than a couple months later, power loss and mileage loss. Take it in, clean turbo. Two weeks later, take it in, replace turbo.

All because she didn't have more than 5000 miles put on her in a year and a half. I'm suspicious that I'm having turbo issues again, it's having the same symptoms as the first time, but ~100k later.

Your price gripe? Thinking that's more of a geographic thing, Ford's ain't cheap around here at all.

Mine sits for up to two weeks at a time, but when I do drive it, it is usually at least 100 miles down the highway, and at least half of that time is with a trailer. I have the same fears as you, but I really don't have anywhere to go during the week that is far enough away, and would rather let it sit than drive it on my daily commute of 1.5 miles.

Agreed. These trucks shouldn't be run for only 5 minutes you really have to work these trucks sometimes. They like to be run hard! Don't be afraid of it.

History on my truck.

The Original Owner was a snowbird. Every winter he hooked up his 5th wheel and went south for a few months. Then returned home and parked the truck until the next season.

28,000 miles in 5 years.

The Oasis report on the truck shows the turbo was replaced 3 times.

Food for thought.

Is it the sitting or the low miles per year that kills them? I only drive about 6000 miles per year but I drive my truck every day

Mine sits a lot two,but when I do drive it it gets worked.ill find a steep hill and get it good and hot, letting off and on the pedal to excersize the turbo a bit.usually its once a week for a round trip of 200 miles to and from fishing.I think sitting is more detrimental than not driving it at all.if your driving short trips put it in tow/haul and get it hot.the only major problem I've heard of is turbos sticking due to sitting.could be more though.i always hit full boost at least once when I drive mine, its more fun that way too.

It just bothers me the truck sits so much. I use to drive 50 miles one way twice a week over two mountains so was exercised. Now I don't have to make that run anymore.
The one guy I have known since high school has a 02 with the 7.3,and he short trips his all the time. He told me I worry about it too much he has no issues. I then informed him the 6.0L is a much different animal.
I just don't have any loads I need to pull/haul,and everything I need to do or anyplace I need to go is local (less than 10 miles)
The truck is running better, and the computer seems to be re-learning things because each time I drive it the lie-o-meter keeps going up. I'm not getting the MPGs I was before the head gaskets started leaking, but it seems the truck is on its way when it gets run.

Don't want to hijack the subject, but why not?
I should avoid short trips with my truck?

Pretty much all of my trips are short (< 10 miles), yet the engine always gets up to operating temp so I don't see why its a problem. In the winter months I'm sure this won't be the case, so I will make a point to take it on a long drive at least once a week. I started a thread like this a while back and someone replied saying they've used their 6.0 for a 2 mile commute to work everyday for 5 years and haven't had any problems.
