Turbocharger Problems

Guys,
I need your thoughts. My truck only has about 19K mi. I don't drive it very much because of fuel prices so it sits in the garage most of the time. I pull it in and out of my garage when I work on my '66 Mustang. I don't let it run very long when I do this. After doing this for a while the turbo had to be replaced last year. I assume the variable vanes in the turbo were sticking causing my problems. Now with my rebuilt turbo, I experienced the same symtoms. I started driving my truck for a few days and the problem started to go away. Is the factory turbo that sensitive to these short trips in and out of my garage? Does it help to let the truck just sit there and idle or do I need to drive it down the road and warm it up?

Thanks

Every now and then take it out and drive it like you stole it. If it sits a while it will rust. I think that they call it turbo rot.

Sonic......I know a Ford truck that was subjected to virtually the same kind of "abuse" that your truck was. Ford replaced the turbo every three months and it had virtually no miles on it. Typically trips of less than 10 miles are VERY hard on a diesel and idling is NOT something you want to let your truck sit and do since that only contributes to your problem. Take it out and drive it decently "hard" occassionally to clean out the rust and soot. It won't hurt it to get good and warm. I know it sucks at $4+/gal., but it's like good preventative maintenance..

I will try to minimize the idling and run it "hard" (I usually try to) whenever I can to blow out the rust and soot. Thanks for the suggestions guys!

On a side note, If your truck has the inductive flash, the turbo will exercise during extended idling. Still not recommended to do excessive idling, just thought you would like to know.
