As my air cleaner was in perfect condition, I took the top to Lowe's. They had a full gloss oil based paint that they color matched to the air cleaner. They got it exact.

In the past I never used a primer for engine paint. But then again, I have never kept a vehicle long enough to see if the paint alone came off.....
Would primer help the paint stay on?
Maybe...... THIS....
PLUS THIS......
EQUALS..... something that will stay on an engine?
Absolutely! Always primer! It makes the paint stick way better and it also helps fill in any minor flaws and makes the paint smoother and glossier.

But I would add... Always use the same paint brand. I have had trouble in the past with using multiple paint Brands. Cracking and bubbling can occur.
Ohhhhhhh...... so even all paints are not created equal.... MAN... what a mess this world is in, if paints can't even get along with each other....LOL.

Well they SAY enamel right but they all use different formulas. The main thing is to make sure everything is super clean and there is no dirt and grease. I always go over the whole thing with paint thinner after cleaning it before I paint.
