I was in my 04 excursion, all stock, and I was going through a gate. I got out to open the gate and when I got back in and went forward, I heard something that sounded like a manual **** pellet gun. I had no idea what it was. I proceeded to hook up to my trailer and get on the highway. After an hour or so I noticed my air filter sensor light flashing that my filter was clogged. I pulled in at a parts store to pull the filter and check it, and I needed to check my underhood gauge too. Only it was gone. Nothing but a clear tube left. I found the spring and the yellow rubber boot down in the wiring harness below it, and I found the sensor with the "push to reset" button hanging off the back of the sensor. What the hell????
Does anyone have any idea why this happened? Does anyone know where I can find a used sensor? I'm guessing they are expensive and having that light on is pissing me off. I'm tempted just to silicone the sensor back on... at least then I would still have the dash light.
mine did it to blew up and the dash light turned on found peices all over the moter compartment on driver side
over time the heat and vibration takes its toll on the sensor
no worries though they werent built the best but have been updated and are beefier than before
the new one compared to the old one on my 03 was built better and not so fragile looking
its been on there a few years and no repeate failure
I wouldnt try a used sensor
just go to Ford and get a new one
IIRC it was under 100.00 could be off alittle it was a couple years ago
and dont drive it like that for to long its letting unfiltered air into the air intake and thats the last thing you want is to feed your moter dirty air
No way I'm spending anything close to $100 for that piece of crap.. I discovered its called the filterminder and it looks like its somewhat common for them to break. also looks like they malfunction pretty regularly and aren't very accurate. with ford filters going for $40-50 each it looks like my truck will get an aftermarket filter as soon as I have some money...
he has the best prices on OEM parts Iv found heck you could probably get it for 1/2 that price I said before
stuff on his site is sometimes hard to find so you may want to call them
AS far as the air filter Stick with the stock filter setup its made great one of the parts Ford got RIGHT
It will filter a TON of dirt and last a long time with normal use on road
I just got 80,000 miles out of mine and it could have made it longer
lots of folks still running a stock filter and tunned its good to 500 ponies or more

They are accurate enough to rely on.
The OEM filter will last most folks between 75k and 100k miles.
An aftermarket filter is not worth getting unless you are over 500hp as Benny said (unless you just want to hear more turbo sound).

Yes, it is a Filter Minder® and they are actually quite accurate and rarely malfunction. They do occasionally crack or blow apart, but that is usually due to age.

Could not agree more... Ran my first one to 100,000 miles and replaced it for good measure even though it still had some life left in it. Currently have almost 70,000 miles on the second one and see no reason this one will not reach or exceed 100,000 miles as well...
