Started truck this morning and it sounded weak & sluggish ...like the batteries were on their way dying. Just didn't have the "crisp" crank like usual. Not an "out of fuel" sound to it, if you know what I mean.
Drove into WalMart (batteries under warranty) had both checked...cranking amps were 365a instead of 700a. Great, problem solved, one new battery!
Not exactly. Jumped in the truck to leave and experienced the same "weak" start. I'll take a closer look at the terminals and posts on the batteries when I get home from work, but wondering if there aren't other issues I need to look at.
Would a bad starter give the same "weak crank" experience, like the batteries are dying? <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->
you need to have them check BOTH batteries separately with a load tester. they need to be disconnected from one another. one cell in one battery can kill both. also i have always been told...replace batteries in pairs...not just one. i think that may be the problem.
They did disconnect to test separately. They replaced the one that had the below rated CCA. They wouldn't warranty the other because the "instrument" had over 700CCA and the print out said "OK".
Does the load testing involve the "roll away" tester and not the hand held one liked they used today?
i guess a load tester could be either or. if all is ok battery wise, check the 3 wire clip on the back of the alternator. people have reported them lose causing no charge issues. if the batteries and charging system is good, might have a weak/going south LPOP...just a guess though without some more diagnosics

You go from alt and batterys to LPOP???
In 10 years I have seen a handfull of LPOP go out...

Seen LOTS of starters...
I would suspect a starter is getting weak.
first off...i said it might be...obviously more diagnostics are needed, but i stated that because i had a similar issue when i bought my truck. new batteries, new alternator...after testing from a "mechanic" and still had a slow start. thought to try LPOP after reading it here and it was solved. very well could be a starter. i was just trying to help and keep the op's post up for others with more knowledge than me.
