Comp cams Xtreme series
OK guys I'm up here in Canada and have been hearing some BAD stuff and I'm very concerned about some of Comp Cams grinds. Some of the people that have the Xtreme cams hydraulic grinds are very upset at the ticking noise that the cam shaft is making at an idle, in one case it sounds like a sewing machine. They have checked valve lash, changed the oil, changed oil pumps, went to a heavier weight oil and even changed lifters, suspecting that was the culprit, to no avail. Then they changed the cam to another brand, and the ticking is non existent. A phone call to the techy and the response was "so what do you want us to do"!!!! Have any of you that have used the Xtreme grinds experienced this? I have NO feedback on the Xtreme roller cams and lifters, but before I spend on the order of 1500.00 Canadian for a cam and lifters, I would like to have the peace of mind that I'm getting a good product. I would like some feedback from my fellow enthusiasts PLEASE. John

There was some good info on a recent post about cams (268deh). Comp cams came up as problematic which S@#$ me to tears as thats what I have in my 400. I have heard that before but it was after I bought mine. There was also some discussion on the cams from MPG. They do a good price on cam, lifters and a break in for what looks to be a pretty reasonable price as well as tailoring the grind to suit your application. I thought you dealt with these guys. How come $1500 chief?

ticking noise question?
If a 400 with a different cam has no noise? Then you install a 265 cam in and now a ticking noise has come up. My next question is your lifter bore tolerance. Check you clearance on lifter Bores. Or is the lifters out of spec?? Make sure your pushrods aren't touching also during the rotation. How far are the lifters coming out of the lifter bore? several questions to be asked. I have ran the 265xtreme in a 429 yrs ago and pulled it for a 270 solid cam from comp then went with a 274 solid from MPG heads and never looked back. I did learn what I needed after several cams for my application. Had scott cut one for me with my paticular needs and he nailed it. Probably should of went with him in the first place. About 8 or 9 yrs ago. I have learned a many things the expensive way and try not to repeat history if possible. good luck and check into your lifter bores if possible.

just thinking?
haven't looked up but what is the ramp rate of the cam? This is the number at the end like -8 or -12 or something of this nature. If the ramp rate is a little steep it could rock the lifter in the bore a little and cause some strange stuff. If your bores are a little out of spec which is possible! just things that keep me up at night. if the lifter bore is out of spec could cause a bleed off and possible do some strange things. I don't have tools to truely test out, things to check. need to get with some smarter/experienced people than me. catch you later.

The first post suggested everything changed to no avail. When the cam was changed, BANG, problem solved. That says cam to me, but if the cam looks visibly ok what could it be? I can understand something like the ramp rate as per wyoming as that may suggest a very agressive closing rate on the valve. Again the first part of thread talks about flat tappet/hydrauilc lifters. He is after any comments on the roller lifters. Potentially roller lifters and cam is a completely different animal especially the cam and the billet it is made from and its grind.
