Need a new cam... NOT Comp.

Hey everyone. We just got my motor running again (the one that has been rebuilt twice already). We thought that it sounded like there was some pretty excessive valvetrain noise, so we took the valve covers off and started to adjust the valves and one of the rockers hardly even moved at all. So we pulled the intake off and looked at the lifters to find out that two of the lifters were shorter than the rest (done by our builder, not us) and that the second brand new cam was ruined. So we have decided that we need to try something different. I was thinking about a hydraulic roller cam to try to match the Summit Racing part # CCA-34-231-4 Xtreme 4X4 cam ( http://www.compcams.com/Technical/Se...umber=34-231-4 ) . I want as much low-mid range torque as possible and a lopey idle wouldn't upset me. Would I need different cam bearings? I understand that I would need hydraulic roller lifters as well. What else would I need other than the cam and lifters? I have the stock sized stainless valves and D0VE-C heads. I have whatever valve springs that comp recommends for use with that cam. They are double spring and my father insists that they're 150 lb. I don't personally know what they are. So, can anyone please give me some kind of direction with the motor now? Thanks, Austynn.

The first question I have is what kind of cam break in compound did you use? For some reason I think the cam was dry or not lubed up all the way when you installed them. With that said, if you run rollers your going to need shorter pushrods. The roller lifters are taller then normal flat tappet lifters.

We didn't install the cam, but our engine builder has built numerous 460's for pull trucks and show trucks/cars and he knows what he is doing. I know he wouldn't have installed it dry. I can do shorter pushrods if I have to, but first I would need to find a hydraulic roller cam and lifters. Or do you think the Lunati part # 61600lk cam and lifters would be fine? I can't find what valve springs I would have to use with that cam though. Thanks, Austynn.

I've heard good things about that Lunati cam, have you checked the bore alignment on those lifter bores? Used to race a SS Dodge back in the day and had a bad bore and it would wipe out a cam in short order, the lifter just took out the lobe.

Best way to find the spring pressures would be to call both Comp and Lunati. Give them the respective cam part #'s and ask what spring pressures should be. Call Comp first though. They will give you an idea as to what happened as well. Then call Lunati with the info you have from Comp.

As for the local shop, I hve been fixig huey's and cobra's for 14 years now and I still have to refer to the book to make sure I did everything right. I am not knocking your engine guy by any means. Just sometimes we become so wrapped up in our own world we forget the basics. Were the shorter lifter bottoms uneven? Or completely flat? If they are completely flat then the wrong lifters were installed. If memory serves me orectly all ford lifters are the same part # no matter if it is a 302 or a 460.
