ford 9" leaking-hows it work

my left axle seal? is leaking. i tore it apart to see if i had a bent axle shaft, due to some 4wheelin, but it didnt look that tweaked, if any at all. so, i went about seeing where a seal would be, but i couldnt exactly find one. what i think is the seal, is a flat piece of metal that bolts to the tube, that you get at through the hole in the axle shaft mounting surface. is this the seal thats leaking? and then, if i wanted to replace that, it looks like i have to tear the bearings off, correct? and probably better idea to just replace them? im no expert, so please help haha. Thanks

First, which bearing do you have?
The early 9" rears (73-mid 75) have a sealed ball bearing. The seal is inboard of the bearing, in the axle housing. You remove the axle to get to the seal. You don't have to do anything to the bearing itself.
If it is the later roller bearing, it is lubed by the gear oil in the rear. The seal is outboard of the bearing. To replace this seal you must remove the bearing from the axle. It has to be pressed off then pressed back on.

Also, check you axle vent to make sure it isn't plugged... if it is the axle needs to vent somewhere the axle seals are usually the first to go.

id say i have the "newer" syle, where the bearings are "open"/roller bearings. its a 78 ford, so this style makes sense. so the seal is the on that plate that bolts on to the axle tube, and to get to the bolts, you go through the hole in the axle flange/tire mount?

Yes you unbolt the axels by taking out the 4 bolts that hold the backing plate to the axel tube

No, the seal is not on the retainer plate (the four bolt plate). The seal looks like it's part of the bearing but can be replaced. Be forwarned though, quite often the bearing is damaged when it's pressed off and will need to be replaced anyway.
Here is a picture of the bearing/axle combo. The seal is the olive drab colored piece. This axle is an aftermarket axle and the four bolt retainer isn't on it.
This bearing is often reffered to as a "set 20" bearing.

How about making sure the axle vent is clear before buying uneeded parts?

Just saying... the first place the venting goes if the vent is plugged are the axle seals... clear the vent and no more leaking.

X2, I skipped over that part and shouldn't have. Definitely check the axle vent. Unscrew it from the axle housing and run a drill bit through it to make sure it's clear or, like Bullitt390 said, even a new seal will start leaking.

If the vent is plugged, opening it up may or may not stop the leak. But, it is the first step to take in fixing the leak. At the very least, unclogging the vent should slow it down some.

If the bearing/seal have to be replaced, a press will be needed, as previously mentioned. Just make sure the lip of the seal has some oil wiped on it before it's pressed into place, or the seal could burn the lip off, and the leak will return.
