Hi Guys......I was hoping someone on here can give me some direction with issues that I am having with my VSS. Truck is a 2003 F250, with the 5.4, 6 inch lift kit, has 91,000 miles.
Little back round.....back in March I was driving through some deep puddles, water was half way up the tires to the hubs. Right after that my check engine light came on. I fugured something got wet (maybe an oxygen sensor). I disconnected the battery, cleared the CEL. Took it to my mechanic anyway, he put it on the scanner and saw a code for a speed sensor. We left it as is and truck ran great for couple months. Then one day the OD light started blinking and the CEL came on. Took it to my mechanic, put it on his scanner and said its one of the speed sensors. He could not narrow it down to which one so we left it as is. Truck ran fine for another month. The one day the CEL came on again. This time I took it to the dealership, they scanned it and said it the VSS and they replaced it. Drove home all was OK, Saturday hooked my boat up to the truck to go fishing, drove a few miles and the OD light started flashing and CEL went on again. Took it back to the dealearship, same code for the VSS. They chcked the VSS they just installed and it is not faulty. They started asking about my lift....I told them the lift has been on there for a few years. Any hints as to what this could be? Could the water have shorted something else out? Can it be the PCM? My truck has been at dealership for a 3 days and they still cannot figure anything out. Sorry for the long post, but I thought the backround may help.

That's because he doesn't know what he's doing. There are separate codes for each speed sensor. The code tells you which sensor has a problem.

If the sensor is good either the tone wheel inside the diff is bad (very unlikely, but possible) or there is a short or corrosion in the wiring between the VSS and the PCM. Any *GOOD* technician would know how to look for this.
Well the dealership called......need a new PCM, $950. Pisses me off that I paid to have the VSS replaced that may have not even been faulty and now I have to pay for the PCM.
I just went through this whole ordeal in July same symptoms you describe, changed every sensor including O2 and plugs and finally COP, I checked a rechecked wiring with Ohm meter. That VSS sensor kept coming up, what it boils down too was a bad COP that wasn't bad enough to have it's own code. Have you changed the COPS and plugs?
