That's the thing, really. On a diesel it isn't going to add power, isn't going to improve mileage, isn't going to do anything of value except shout "look at me look at me look at me".
I don't support waking up the whole neighborhood by any means. That sort of behavior is just plain disrespectful and the source of a lot of needless regulation.
However, I have witnessed two different diesel pickups benefit from a removal of the muffler. One was a SD and the other was a Cummins. I'm quite sure the SD averaged a full mpg difference and the Cummins rang in at 1.5 average. Just to mention, out of fairness, both were doing commercial duty and no programmers or other mods.
For my truck, though, it would just get a 'flow through' type muffler or an upgraded exhaust system. Same improvements and less noise in the cab and less chance of ticking off the neighbors. jmho.
I'm not a fan of straight piped trucks either. I can hear my turbo spool up with a muffler. Thats enough for me to be happy.
I often come home late at night and I try to be very light on the pedal when coming home because my truck is LOUD and I try not to wake people up.
My neighbor had something done to his 03 6.0 a few weeks ago and now its really loud. The last week or so his son has been taking it to work, leaving at 5 am and it wakes me up every morning because he floors it up our hill.
In Pa in order to get a motorcycle license you have to take a two day class. Class room and riding. In 1988 when I did it the instructor used the Hurt report for part of the class room study. Best, CB
If pulling off the muffler increased the MPG that much your trucks not running well and has cloged the chambers in the muffler long before you pull it.
