Every now and then, the transmission sticks in 2nd or 3rd gear and does not shift when it is supposed to. Today was the worst by far - it was stuck in 3rd gear and rev'ed to over 3K with no shift. I got off the road and restarted it - no problem after that. It has been 23k since the last service and no towing in the interim. Trans fluid temp was 153 when it was happening. Any thoughts?
I was thinking about getting it flushed (maybe a little metal in the oil?)
The last owner had a flush done at the dealership right before I bought it (at 25K mi). OEM filters and fluid done at Ford. I only have 48K mi on the truck right now.
Sounds like it could be a sticking solenoid but I'm not a tech. Possible a flush and new filters could help. A ford scanner would narrow it down. Sometimes paying the dealer diag. fees are the cheapest way to go. Throwing parts at a problem can get exp. and end up in more damage.
Just thought I would give some feedback. I got the flush done and it has not happened again. It has been a month or two, so there must have been some debris in there getting stuck every now and then. It was a bit before I was due for a flush - I also had them change both filters while they were in there. 69cj thanks for your help and advice - Dan

For future reference you only need to change the external filter. I do mine every 10,000 miles but I also tow a 31' 5th wheel. Internal filter stops trees and boulders and needs to be changed during rebuilds. Go to dieselfiltersonline.com and get the NTZ tranny filter. They make them for Motorcraft and are a lot cheaper. You can also get the oil and fuel filters there under the Racor brand.

Just to be clear. Was it a hot/power flush or a complete drain and refill. My Friend has a 2001 with the same issue. He has about 150,000 miles on his. Since new he has only had I believe one hot/power flush all the rest have been drain and fills. A trans shop has suggested a drain and fill and not a complete hot/power flush. He claims that this may produce even more issues.
I had them do the hot flush, which I thought was the best way to get a complete fluid change. The drain and flush only removes about half of the fluid, right?
BTW, another possible reason for the transmission issues I was voltage related - I was having some battery issues causes by a loose connection on one of the terminals. It was fixed at about the same time, but the transmission problem seemed to start before that electrical problem developed. I only have 48K on mine.
Good news is the truck runs great again with no issues at all (for now )
The 2001 (7.3) transmission has a drain plug for the converter so it doesn't require a hot flush. Drain and refill is doable by the user.
That's great. So let m get this straight. We drain the pan. We remove the pan. How do we get access to the TC? Is it accessible with the pan removed? How do we turn the TC to see the plug? By hand?
Any other info would be great.
The torque converter is in the bellhousing just behind the engine, ahead of the pan. There is access to the bellhousing from the bottom. You can turn the engine with a breaker bar and socket on the front pulley of the engine.
