starter engagement
starter engagement
Hello all, new to forum but been on here many times. Hope someone can help.
99 f250 superduty, 7.3 liter. with the key on in run position(not in statr position), I can wiggle the shifter around in Park position & the starter will engage, put it in any other gear & its fine. I have to move shifter around a bit to get it to turn over, then when it starts, the starter stays engaged until i move it from Park, then when i go back to park & move it around, it will engage the starter while running. I dropped the column, checked-lubed moving parts, but now i don't know. Would a bad nuteral safety switch mane the starter engage, maybe a bad relay somewhere??

On the drivers side of the trany there is a control box that u can adjust a few degrees. its the starting safety switch have a friend hold the key in start position and move it tell it cranks, tighten the 2 retaining bolts snug and recheck by starting in both p. and n. in it still acks up replace controler and adjust the same. Also you may need a new starting cylinoid under the hood if it still stays ingaged and doesnt retracked like its suppost too.
Starter disengages when in any other gear except park. If I put it in nutral, key switch & starter work correctly. turn key off, put it in park, turn key to on position(not start, just on), & starter goes & goes. Pull it out of park & good to go. Just replaced entire steering column thinking it had to be in there, same issue. Will go try the adjustment on trans right now. I needed a new column anyway, tilt & overdrive selector were broke. Got that fixed anyway.
Your overdrive button is an easy fix POP the retainer platic ring off the end off your shifted. Wiggle and a little switch will pull out. With the tilt pull the 3 screws out of the bottom turn your key to the on position with a tooth pic or small drill bit push the pin in under the ignition key and pull the ignition out. Remove the plastic covers and inspect the tilt ARM that the tilt rod you had to unscrew to pull off the plastic covers. Check it for being bent or blocked by something. Reinstall everything the same as pulling it apart.
overdrive handle was snapped right off, no fixin the button. The 3 little wires were also worn thru at base of shift lever, needed new lever assy. The tilt was just sloppy. Tried another selenoid on wheelwell. not the problem. What would give the starter power with just the key on & wiggling the shift lever. Almost like some wires are rubbed thru, but seems like it would b all the time.

problem solved. It was the range sensor on the side of trans. Or nuetral safety switch, whatever u want to call it. New one was 100 dollars at dealership, had it in stock. Found them on ebay for 40 or so, but I would rather have an OEM unit. Thanks for the help Matt.
