starter wont shut off

Man this is a new one on me. Went to start the ol girl today and the starter stayed engaged. Turned key off and starter was still turning. Well couldnt really shut engine off because starter would always restart it. I think the thing is possessed. Even when I tried to stall it the thing stayed running. Finally got it to shut off somehow. Was even beating on the steering column thinking maybe something inside was sticking. Now I cannot get it to act up but I am worried it will leave me stranded somewhere again. Any replys would be appreciated.

Sounds like a problem with the ignition switch, next time try pulling the little wire at the starter solenoid, if this stops the starter you have found the problem.

Thanks ken for the reply. I forgot the cellunoid was on the firewall and not the starter. I have been working on too many vehicles lately, must be losing it. LOL. I was on a hill at the time and I could not put it in neutral to jump out but if it happens again I will try this tip. Do you still think I should replace the cellunoid in case it does it again. Thank you. By the way I want to congratulate you on having such a nice forum. Responses are quick coming and not everyone thinks we should know it all.

I'm leaning towards the ignition switch as the cause of the problem.

If you remove that small wire & it stops cranking the ignition switch (as mentioned) is shorting out.

I have had that happen to me and it was the starter solenoid sticking. If it happens again give it a quick rap with the end of a screwdriver and it should free itself, but they are cheap so you might want to replace it.If you think it is the ignition switch if it happens again pop the small wire off the solenoid and if it doesn't stop it has to be the solenoid itself.

The exact same thing happened to me. I finally figured out that the soleniod was sticking. I just undid the wire to the starter and started by jumping the wire to the solenoid. After about a week of that it came unstuck and it hasn't done it since. I'm too poor to even get one until i get my first paycheck from the new job.

One good wack on the solenoid will stop the starter. If the ignition switch were at fault the key would not return from start to the run position.

Thanks for the replys. I replaced the cellunoid ($8.50) and hasnt done it since. I was parked on a hill at the time with no emergency brake so getting out of the truck was out of the question. It was kind of funny really. Everytime I would try to shut the key off the cellunoid would restart it and lurch forward. I even tried to stall it in 5th gear but it would not. Boy am I glad there was no one else in the park and ride to witness this. LOL. Thanks again for the quick replys.
