when i turn the key glow plugs cycle and everything else but the engine wont turn over u think its the starter selonoid but the autozone said there isnt one on that truck was wantin some input before i tear it up
Do you have a standard are you depressing the clutch........during start attempt.
Auto must be in park or nuetral..... wiggle the selector.
Go to the right fender if ya see a round relay with red wires off each side and a single small wire top middle that would be the "Starter relay". The starter solenoid is on the starter itself........
Easy way to remember:
Starter relay .....relays power to the starter when required.
Starter solenoid ..... pulls Bendix gear into the flywheel, then activates the starter motor to crank the engine.
If you wish to test relay, just jumper across the large terminals with an old screw driver and see if starter turns. Make sure your in park or nuetral
My '86 needs either an adjustment in the column, or a new starter switch, which is mounted on top of column. I just push up on top of steering wheel while turning the key and it starts. The key turns a yoke in the column, an actuator rod pushes the starter switch, which transfers electrical power to relay. I have seen the yoke in the column broken, the rod bent or stuck, and the plastic switch stripped or broken. That might not be it either, but your description would make it a possibility.
if it's a stick, might be your clutch safety disconnect. mine was giving problems and you could turn key hard as you wanted and no dice. my luck, had a nonadusting switch. ended up bypassing switch. now all is good! maybe not safety first, but still good.
Another problem that pops up from time to time is the tilt assembly will come loose and cause all kinds of mayhem. The simplest way to check for this if the column rocks when you have it set for a certain tilt.
Instead of throwing parts and unnessesary work at it lets start with a 12volt test light.. step one check the battery side of the starter relay, the big red wire going to the battery positive with the other end of the test light hooked to ground..should light.. if not find out why. Step two this will require a helper..the small wire to the relay.. test light to the wire, clutch depressed turn key to start.. light should light.. if not its in the switch.. if it does light now we go to step 3 the output wire the other large wire repeat step two.. if lights we have to go to the starter.. if no light and all other tests passed replace the starter relay.. and while your at auto zone kick your parts man in his.. a...
at this point no sparks.. no shorted wires and doing this the way it should be done.. we go to the stater large terminal careful down there.. repeat step two wire should go hot..light should light.. if so and still no start..we go to the starter selenoide output to the starter and repeat step two..light should light if not.. selenoide is bad.. if it lights starter is bad..
Look for a connector with 2 blue/red stripe wires in it.
There is a jumper wire that should also be in the end of the connector in a U shape between the two blue/red wires.
ok i got it my horn works cruise cant check cause my tranny still isnt in but i just need it to pass inspection the tilt is broke but stays up so im not gonna fix it
