First hook with the 390 got 2nd place. I was afraid to try 2nd gear with only having around 4-5 miles on the new clutch disk, and the track was pretty tacky. thinking about it again i should have at least given it a shot as I only lost by 6 feet and even 1-2mph more would have probably gotten me there. This is still with stock manifolds and running duals.
Very nice! Gotta love that sound...
What kind of mufflers are you running? Engine sounds pretty consistent, what kind of RPMs are you running?
It definitely sounds better than the old 360 did.
The mufflers are just the open flow glass packs. The shortest i could find something like 16" long using dual 2.5" pipe. It was turning right at 5000, and it hardly moved from that RPM during the run, thats what makes me think i could have made it with 2nd gear. I bet it would sound even better with headers.
Nice pull! With headers it'll turn more rpms and have a good bit more power. You'd have won for sure. Love to see these old trucks pulling!
I think if i would have tried for 2nd i could have bet him the way it sits now.
DD says about another 70hp with headers and open exhaust, and the rules say we can straight pipe but it has to have 6ft of pipe if you do. If i do some mild porting/gasket matching to the intake and heads along with CJ valves and shave about .20 to bump up the CR should be another 100hp The 350 chev that won will eat dirt Now she just has to learn to pull out and not tear up parts lol
Side note. how many CC's are lost when you shave .010 from heads?

The DDs are a little generous. The real dyno results have shown headers give about a 30-40hp and 40-50ftlbs gain on a 425hp motor (which is a fair bit more than what I'd wager your making). So you might say 25hp 35ftlbs more with headers at your power level. With the port matching and shave you might make that 35hp 40-45ft lbs total gain or something pretty close.
Shaving .010 off will increase CR by about .2 pts.

I would like to have it around 400hp with the headers and head/porting. C6ae-r heads, streetmaster intake. Do you think 400 is possible with a ported streetmaster?
If i shave .020 that will put it at about 10.25CR as its 9.85 now.
I would like to get it on an engine dyno before next spring after the headers and headwork is done just to see what it really is. But i would like to go roller cam also and that adds a ton of $
I forget what cam you're running. With a moderate/mild cam, ported heads, and headers I think you'll be around 400. The Streetmaster is definitely not the bottleneck. People have made 600hp with it.
Roller=$$$ (something like 1000) lol. It's so much better though.

comp cams magnum 280H. Wow 600HP is pretty nice, Glad t know i don't have to worry about the intake at all lol
The bad part isn't buying the cam, its the darn lifters . Now with the roller cam your supposed to run a brass distributor gear right?
Some people have had good luck with the bronze gears and some have them wear out pretty fast. Lots of guys just go ahead and use a steel gear.
With the 280H with the rest of the combo I'd say you'd be good for 400hp and something like 450tq.
Here's a link to Barrys roller kit's and the thread talks a bit about dizzy gears.
At 600hp the streetmaster does start to become a bottleneck...lol and that was on a stroked 427. But anything under 500hp and it isn't restricting anything.

That 600HP figure on the streetmaster.. is that with the port work that is on the sheet that edelbrock says to do to the intake?
Yes it was. There are "ears" around the corners of the plenum that can and should be ground away.
Ok i had figured that would have been done for that much HP. Do you (or anyone) happen to have any pics of one ported? All i have is the drawing on the PDF of how to port it, but id kinda like to see a pic also. I'll haven't touched either the intake or the heads. I'm saving that for winter along with larger valves possible a roller cam or atleast one a little larger.
Well I don't have a way to put the pic from Jay Browns book on here but basically it's like this.

Say that that is a corner of the plenum like your looking down at it. Where the x is, the casting is protruding into the square shape. Effectively reducing plenum volume somewhat and rounding the corners of the square shape. You just grind those away and blend it down to match the runners. That's the best description I can give, sorry I don't have a pic. lol

Thats all that has to be done along with matching with the heads? I had thought thats what the directions where saying to do but i wasn't exactly sure so i never touched it.What is the power limit for the non ported? Ive been meaning to order that book but haven't got to it. Can you PM me the link on where to find it? maybe i can get it in the next 2-3 weeks.
Thanks a bunch for the help. I have some small things to tweak on the truck for thursday and fridays pull, so we'll see how it does then. I'll probably try 2nd gear thurs so i know weather to have her try it when she pulls it on friday. I think i'll have to be swapping gears to 4.56's though as its a pretty big jump from low 1st to low 2nd. That brings up another question, is there anyway you can change gear ratios inside the trans? Or do the rebuild kits only have 1 option? I beleive its a t18 in it now.
