What are you 390 guys running as far as dia. and mufflers? Full exhaust, dumped or side exit? Mine has long tubes with 2 1/4 to a pair of 2 1/2 magnaflows but it just sounds like theres a bunch of socks stuffed in the pipes. Ive been thinking of going 2 1/2 with single chamber flows and either side exit or coming out through the bedside with a nice bologna cut coming out about 1/2in past the sheet metal. One last question, I dont have smog on my truck so whats ideal for exhaust? It sounds great with open headers but I dont want to be harassed by the fuzz lol.
My 390 is running a set of headers to some 2 1/2'' pipes to dual Magnaflows, then exit straight out under the rear bumper. Sounds all quiet and mellow until you put your foot in it, then they get loud.
My mufflers are round, like 6" around and 16" long and dont give much of a sound. Sounds quite crappy to me. All my previous cars had flows, I deff gota change whats on there.
Just my opinion but, I personally think for performance that 2 1/2" is a little big for a stock 390. 2 1/4" is plenty and I really like the two chamber flowmaster 40 series. Here is an excellent video that shows the different sounds of the flowmaster line. YouTube - Flowmaster Muffler Comparison
I know that it is for a chevy small block and 3" pipes but, it shows the difference between each.
Well I pulled the exhaust of today and found that the pipe going into the collector on the driver side is leaking and its bearly welded on. So this weekend I think in going to find some scrap bends, get new collectors, pipe and fab up my own exhaust.
