I bought a 98 Expedition about 10 months ago with 49k miles on it. Now the truck has 71k miles. While driving to work about a month ago my oil light flashed and pressure dropped. Almost instantanously the pressure jumped back up and the light dissapeared. It did this twice in two miles then the motor just went. It was completely locked up. I had it towed to my family shop and am now in a battle with my extended warrantee company over the expense of replacing the motor. My mechanic at the shop says it was the oil pumps failure that caused the motor to seize. I was wondering if anyone has seen any threads regarding faulty oil pumps for the 5.4L or any recalls or service bulletins. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I just installed a Jasper rebuilt 5.4 in a '98 Expedition that did the exact same thing. This Truck only had 59,000 miles on it when it happened. I did a search for TSB's on oil pump & bearing failures & came up with nothing. This truck had regular oil changes & there were no sludge in the engine. It had to be caused by a defective oil pump, but since they did not have the extended warranty they were SOL. no help from Ford. BTW, the build date on the Expy was 12-'97.
Hey thanks for the reply. Yeah I've talked to a few other shops now and 3 of them so far have had this happen with 97-98 Expeditions with 60k-85k on them. I too keep regular service of my oil and filter. I've been on the phone with the warranty company for 3 hours today and so far it looks as though I am not gonna have a problem getting them to replace the engine. I also believe I'm going to go with a jasper rebuild seeing as how the are some of the best remans out there on the market. I was thinking of maybe installing a lightning long block but I am not sure as to how much more expenses I will incure doing this. Again Thanks for the response and I'll keep posting more updates.
