Question oil pressure switch

Can someone tell me where to find the OP switch on my 5.4 in a 1999 SD.
Does the same switch work the light and the gages?
Want to put in a sender for the gage to work but I don't want to lose the light.

Yours may be different, but my F150 4.6 has the pressure sender screwed into the base casting under the oil filter. I believe the same sender works both the "gauge" and light. I put gauge in quotes because mine is not what I expect a gauge to be with continuous variability. It's just a "go"/"no go" indicator.

If you want to install a real gauge, install an 1/8" pipe T and an additional sender.

OK, it seems the sw works both the light and the go-nogo gage.
If I add a sender where do I splice in the wire so that the sender works the gage and the op switch works the light. Or is that impossible? I want a gage, wife need a light!

I cannot tell you how to split off the light from the "gauge". The existing sensor is probably effectively an on/off switch so you could just cut the conductor to the "gauge", but its probably within the printed circuit on the panel, and it may operate differently. Anyway, would you want the existing to show zero?

Trying to make the existing gauge variable might be possible, but I wouldn't know how, and calibrating it to show the warning area properly would be very difficult. Maybe comparing the current Ford Wiring Diagrams Manual to older ones would indicate a way. Or maybe there's somebody else here who would know how to do it.

Why not just leave that as is and add a separate gauge with it's own sensor?

PS: If you get a digital gauge, it won't look so redundant.

Well a seperate gage is the solution for truck that only has a light.
I, like several others, think that the gage that is so nicley interated into the dash should work properly. IE as it did back in 1974. There is something very deceitful about a gage that is not a gage. It is not deceitful if there is no gage. Anyway I would like to get it to work and I think that has been covered in several posts, but I would also like to maintain operation of the "idiot" light for my wife. Surely someone has covered this ground and I was hoping to use their experience instead of breaking new ground.

O.K! I guess I didn't understand how strongly you felt about this!

Now that you mention it, I think I have seen posts regarding making the gauge fully variable either here or on another forum. You can, no doubt, do a search.

If you're able to accomplish this, please post your experience. I agree it would be nice to have a real gauge.

PS: If you don't get better advise elsewhere, I'm pretty sure the printed circuit on the back of the gauge panel would show an obvious connection between the light and "gauge". These can usually be cut out with a razor blade. Additional circuitry can be hard wired and riveted onto the flex circuit.

As soon as I get the time I will pursue this project.
Will post a diary when done.

Have allready put push buttons in the steering wheel spokes to fix the horn so I guess I can figure out this gage deal.

Well I have the need sender but I have yet to locate to oil pressure switch on the engine. It it's on the oil filter housing it cleverly hidden. No wire visable either. Found a pipe plug in the rear of the R head but no sensor.
Any ideas 99 F250 SD 5.4
