Hey all, i hate to ask a question as one of my first posts but this issue kind of started suddenly and i have zero idea where to start looking.
truck is an '03 6.0 F550 Crew cab (3 door) with a flatbed.
problem started this AM as far as i know. it's my fathers truck, and he was down working on the 35' trailer we tow (it was hooked to the truck) and he hears an alarm. turns out it is the chime in the truck going off for no good reason. truck has been sitting for 24 hours+
he starts it up, it goes away while running and stays off.
until about half an hour ago when it started up again. i went down and started the truck for 30-45 seconds and it goes away while running, but when you shut it down it comes back on!
the bell is the same one that sounds when you open the door with your lights on/keys in the ignition
only thing i could think of is maybe there is a short and it's draining the battery's? but would that sound a bell?
or am i looking at a bad computer? (this truck has given us hell and we have only put 30k on it in 5 years)
When you turn the key on and start the truck, does the ABS light come on momentarily? The ABS module tests the ABS light. If it's burnt out, it sounds a warning chime. The ABS light should come on when you start the truck so that you can see if it's working. If it doesn't, it's burnt out and the chime is telling you that.
would it chime even when the truck is not on?
when i say it starts doing it randomly, as in, we walk out to the truck, key in hand, and it's chiming. but it was not when it was parked...
i'll go check the light though
I wouldn't think it would chime when the key is off. I missed that part.
Giving it some thought, it only does it when the key is off, is that right? I wonder if the key warning switch in the ignition switch cylinder or the wire going to it is somehow shorting out making the instrument cluster think the key is in the ignition.
If your in the truck does the door ajar light stay on even though the door is closed. Mine did the same thing if the key is in the ignition, even in the off position sometimes it would "ding" for hours, even with the door closed. From advice here, I sprayed all the door latches heavily with WD40. Closed the doors 5-6 times resprayed...problem solved. Good luck
we know it has a bad door switch, it has for years. it does this with the key sitting on the dash, not in the ignition!
my first thought was the tumbler getting worn out so i sat there and jiggled it for a good minute, (my dodge DOES have a bad tumbler so thats why i thought of that)
it's not like it does it regularly either, when it started last time, the truck was just sitting there, no one even went within 10 feet of it for a good 3 hours, then we hear the bell start up... WTF this is driving me nuts
There is a method here in the first few posts of this thread on how to fairly simply disable the key-in-ignition switch. If you do that, it will never chime to remind you the keys are still in the ignition. As long as you don't mind that, it might fix your problem.
