e4od hard shift then nothing, no forward/no reverse
i have a 94 f250 7.3IDI (non turbo) with e4od.. left the house yesterday and made it half a mile up the road, turned a 90 degree corner, it hard shifted into 2nd then died.. i have nothing now, no forward/ no reverse.. any ideas? torque converter? rebuild kit?
Could be as simple as low fluid level (maybe due to a leak). Check that the fluid level is good.
Could be that the filter has dropped into the pan. You would need to drop the pan to check.
Could be that the front pump has failed.
If 4x4 could be that the transfer case has slipped into neutral. You can check that by shifting the trans into Park and trying to roll the truck forward or back.
i dont have any visual leaks, i checked it every time i filled up on my move, and when it happened i looked under the truck but nothing visual, level still good. not 4x4 so its something major, lol. napa has a platinum rebiuld kit for $350, anyone think it would be worth the time to just go ahead and rebuild it? any way to check and see if the pump stopped?
Try this. Pull the trans dipstick with engine off, clean it, replace, pull it and note the fluid level on the dipstick. Now start the engine and repeat the process with the trans in PARK. If the fluid level stays the same then either the front pump has failed or the filter has dropped down. If the fluid level is maybe a half an inch lower with the engine running then the pump is working.
definitely check the transfer case if its 4x4. my k10 does it ALL the time. *****ty np208's. i have to go through all of the gears on the transfer case to get it do drive again.
okay checked the level off... pretty high, cranked it checked it again.. pulled it way down(probably bcuz its cold?), so the pump is working... if it is really low would that be a sign of the filter falling off?
The fluid level drop says the filter is in place and that the pump is working....

The only other thing I can think of is that the pump is lifting fluid but not putting up any pressure. You would need to connect a pressure gauge to check that.
It is also conceivable that the internal shift linkage has become disconnected and the trans has shifted into neutral. You would need to drop the pan to check. Unlikely I would have thought but stranger things have happened.
Yea I'd drop the pan, it could develop full rated pressure yet fail to move for couple reasons. However for forward and reverse are to different areas/causes.
Something minor happen you yet to discover or it just plain blew up inside, if so you'd find metal shards/pieces parts down in the pan but you'll need to take a look see to know.
Based on what you stated, how it happen not describing any loud noises felt any bangs with it, I still tend to lean toward the something fairly minor.
There is no "loss of forward and reverse" heading under the trouble shooting section in the ATSG manual I have here, at least not for a tranny that lived! One condition or the other trouble shooting guides yea but not one for both at the same time.
Couple of issue relate to both forward and reverse failure but already covered/suggested here, each then branches off into other aspects of the trans.
I didn't want to copy the whole book here per say, if you could narrow it down by reporting what you find in the pan it might prove to cut that down some. That and if you find a bunch of shrapnel, none of it would be helpful at that point anyway.
