Just been bothering me why the heck the "1" embossed in both cap half's during molding, for number 1 cylinder, are not above each other when assembled, why would Ford do that? and what is the little removable cap for...anyone know
I'm not really sure what you're asking, but the cap is a vent so the distributor can dry out if it gets wet inside.
Just wondering about the "one" molded in during production on each cap half, obviously meant for ease of setting the timing, but they are opposite each other when assembled, because of the key way positioner built in to the halfs.....in other words with balancer at TDC the rotor is aligned with the "1" on the lower cap piece (TDC number 1 cylinder), but the "1" on the upper cap piece is by the number 6 cylinder ignition wire when assembled...just trying to understand Ford engineering.
The 1 means it came out of the #1 mold cavity when it was molded. They need to indentify which cavity each one comes from, to be show the mold maker which cavity is having problems.

OK then...but I never seen a upper cap with a 2 on it
Number 1 on the cap is where number 1 spark plug wire goes.
That's not possible with both marks aligned, common sense would be one mark above the other mark. It does not make sense why they are opposite, hence the reason for the thread. lol
Ever Ford I have worked on and all five that I have now have had or has the number one spark plug wire at that number one on the cap.
If your is not then you have something wrong.

Flip that bottom 180 degrees you can see they will match up in the pics

No, that only fits on the distributor one way, you can't do a 180 on it

Interesting, as I said I was just curious why they have it that way on my base and the one above fromFord Fuel Injection » Setting the timing...mine was wired as you suggested it should be

Me too, although I don't have a long Ford owner history...I feel like I've been missing out all of those years.
