I know this is a stupid question but how do you find the no. one cylinder. I just bought a 65 f-100 w/302 . I have no idea what year it is. When I try to start it, it backfires badly. I want to make sure the plug wires are wired correctly and want to check timing. but I can't get to run. I have a 352 I want to put in it but I would like to get this one running if possible. Thanks.
IT should be labeled on the cap, look for a 1 that is stamped into the cap. If that doesn't work, then you will need to TDC the no. 1 cylinder and see where the rotor points.
The wires and order were correct from the cap (1 being plugged in at 1 stamped hole) Problem is I pulled the pulled #1 plug found tdc and it's off by a couple of holes. I rotated all the wires to the proper position and it started right up. Does it matter? As long I know what position the # 1 is firing.
basically, pull off all the wires, put find TDC on cylinder number 1, mark your distributor cap where you want number 1 to be, it does not matter, drop the distributor in so it's lined up for number 1, then put all wires back on.
You have to find TDC compression stroke.
-Remove #1 plug
-Put your finger over the spark plug hole
-Have a friend turn the engine over in the direction of running rotation, by hand at the crank
-When you feel a burst of air, turn the engine a little more until the 10* BTDC mark of your balancer lines with the timing pointer
-Drop your distributor in to where the rotor button will line directly under the #1 terminal on the cap.
-Put your spark plug wires on
-Set your timing with a timing light
