Dual Exhaust

I just bought a 2009 Ranger FX4, 4.0L, automatic, supercab, 4 door,4X4. I have seen a few Rangers with nice looking dual exhaust. I'd like to put that on my truck. My local Ford dealer says there is no such thing available through Ford. Does anyone have experience with this? I'm a little reluctant to hand it over to an exhaust shop for a custom job.

well you could always buy an after market cat-back system, and just bolt it in yourself, there only a couple zillion makers out there. Go here

Dutter, is your exhaust something your truck came with when new? I attend several wholesale auto auctions every month and I've seen some Rangers with nice sounding duals. I cruised through a few of the offerings in the mentioned website. There is a system that splits on the outlet of the muffler that looks like a pretty simple bolt on. I'm not really determined to get more power, just looks and a little tone.

oh no, i did my own custom exhaust. And if your just looking for better sound and look, then you can get a muffler that has dual ports, So itll goin Single port going in, then go to dual going out, and then you can have the tail pipes going straight out or to the sides with some chrome tips, And that will give you good sound and style. And if money isnt much of a problem for you, i know a muffler shop can make you a nice dual exhaust because if you range sees mostly street then you wont have to worry about clearance.

But if you want killer sound then go with headers and do a straight and true dual exhaust from header to tail pip with 2 cherry bomb glass packs

I doubt my truck will ever go off road. I'll probably resell it in the spring. I don't think the headers and true duals will help resale! There is a custom exhaust shop in my town that has a pretty good rep. I think I'll check with them.

Take a look at LMC Truck's web site. They have a catback system that may interest you.

Aside from the fact that this is an illegal modification and no muffler shop that wants to stay in business will touch a job like that, it's not a bad idea.

Why would you really want true duals. You can get awesome sound with dual outlet mufflers, which gives much of the look and sound of duals, without the downsides. True duals minimize torque and exhaust scavenging. They maximize surface area (pipe) which acts to slow down the exhaust, which creates more backpressure, especially at low RPM.

Much of the scavenging effect occurs because the exhaust travels in pulses and waves. When they combine together into a well made y-pipe, it doesn't restrict the flow, it helps it, the pulses will help push out the previous one, and pull out the next. Because it is running through one pipe instead of two, there is less pipe wall which would slow the exhaust down and lose heat. True duals also have more bends, and weigh more. All of those things hurt performance.

Well here is the wrap up on this. I ordered a system from LMC. It arrived in a box that looked like it had been shipped a few times. That was my first clue. As I unpacked and inspected the system I found the instructions were in direct conflict with the description in the catalog. It was not a true cat back system as it required you to cut the pipe in front of the muffler and the instructions indicated it wouldn't fit around a trailer hitch 32 inches or wider. My frame hitch was 37 inches wide. Back in the box and back to LMC.
I called stylintrucks.com and got some great help. I ordered a Gibson system and it arrived in a few days. I just finished the simple installation. I like the looks and on a quick trip around the block, I like the sound. Everything seems to clear fine and the original system is still all in one piece should I have to put it back on when I retail the truck.

Yeah thats why they use X and H pipes now, even if your running a dual system your better off having a X or H.

Any pics? How about a vid with some sound, not a fan of a loud exhaust unless it's a V8 but I might change my mind.

The exhaust tone is pretty mild. Just a little extra growl. I've driven the truck a 150 miles this morning to take care of some business. I didn't even think about it while on the freeway. I'll try to get some pics up soon.
