as far as i know, the only ford diesel pickups made before the 6.0 was introduced in 2003 to have cats were also made for use in california with california emisssions certification.

The 7.3 diesels sold in Cali had cats.
Perhaps Tom can move this to the right forum for the year truck??
I guess I shoulda asked, If I put on the mbrp exhaust from the turbo back will it cause me problems at the emissions station? I live in Denver Colorado and my truck is not a cali vehicle.
It had a large muffler looking device inbetween the muffler and downpipe can you tell me what that is? It looks like this one. Ford 7.3L Powerstroke Exhaust

I don't know why, but for some reason some Cali trucks have them and some don't. My 99.5 truck is a Cali truck, and didn't come with a cat, nor does my 02 Excursion have one. So it's anyone guess on this one. We do have to smog our trucks here in this state now though, so it make it's real tough to do the upgrades that some of us would like to do.
Ive got a 96 i brought and it was origonaly sold in texas, but it has a factory cat. but it had texas truck plates. then again i live in ohio and im gonna get truck plates and "Lose" the cat.
There is a label on one of the engine valve covers that says if it was built with a Cat or not. If it was built with one, any state requiring emissions inspections will likely require it to have one. If it wasn't built with one, it should not be required.
Here is a thread that describes the engine emissions labels, with pictures and everything.

Be very careful if you live in Ohio. I used to haul horses up there to do horse shows and they were always tough on us with their motor vehicle laws. I don't know if part of it was that we had out of town plates or what, but I stopped going up there because of that. I can only imagine what they would do to a local boy.
They like to jerk you around about anything with emissions titles you name it, if they can give you a hard time they will. Its a "commercal" veichle and it weights more then "10000 GVW"

Got a ticket nonetheless and it would have cost me more to drive up and fight it then it would have to just go ahead and pay it. Which I wouldn't have put it past them on thinking about.
Did a cop just pull you over for loud exahust ?
or were you getting a saftey inspection ?
Neither. I was actually pulled over for not having a CDL even though my combined weight was under 26,001 lbs(unless their min. weight for CDL is different then TX and TN), even going by the sticker weight of both my vehicle and the trailer.
They did inspect the cat though to make sure it was on and I'm sure I would have got "dinged" for that if I wasn't one of the few that didn't do that mod.
Since it would have cost more in fuel and my time then it would have saved me from beating the ticket, I just sent the money in and said no more horse shows up there(I used more colorful language then that, but for this forum I'll go with the Disney version).
