Catalytic Converter

I recently purchased a 2004 F250 Superduty with the 6.0L Powerstroke Diesel engine. Anyhow, it has a Magnaflow 4" turbo back exhaust system on it with no catalytic converter that I can find. Did the 2004's come with catalytic converters? The truck was originally sold in what appears to be southern California and I purchased it in Las Vegas Nevada.

Unfortunately, the lame smog laws out here require diesel vehicles under 10,000 lbs. (gvwr) to get smogged checked at a ridiculous price (more than standard gas engines). The dealership I bought the truck from is trying to say that they didn't know it didn't have a catalytic converter on it. If it does need one to pass smog, they are willing to pay for it (because they have to by law anyhow). I really don't want to run a cat and was wondering if I can pass smog without one, or if I can make it removable. I'm hoping it didn't have one on it in the first place. Ford can't seem to tell me if it ever had a catalytic converter on it or not. The truck had a November 2003 build date if that might help.

Thanks!

Welcome to FTE
Your truck came with a catalytic converter, tell the dealer to get busy and install one.

Since the dealership is paying for it, I'm thinking about having it flanged so i can just take it back off. I think it is a worthless part and can't believe they even smog diesels out here. What do you guys think about running a high flow cat (perhaps one made by magnaflow) and removing the Magnaflow muffer. What will the difference be compared to having a hi-flow cat with no muffler vs. a muffler and not cat? (sound, performance, etc.)

I think I would just get a cat delete pipe to place in there and keep the cat in the garage "just in case" it was needed.

I am thinking I will just bring it in for a smog and play stupid(cat? what cat? Diesel trucks have cats?....and then get argumentative since I didn't do the mods and the truck came from Cali (no smog for diesels there)

You would have to get a different emmisions controls sticker for your engine and door panel, that arguing won't slow him down for too long.

I just don't see how that will help me pass smog though...

Because with a delete pipe you can remove the cat in and out as you please. So put it in then go get your inspection then take it out when done.

Ignorance of the law does not make ones decision right. Have the dealer install the cat, do your inspection, after that you can decide what to do next.

That's not going to happen. I have no intention of letting them do whatever they want to the 4" exhaust (like trying to retrofit a stock catylitic converter by hacking the crap out of the nice mandrel bent tubing).

Where can I get the proper "cat delete pipe" for the 4" Magnaflow turbo back exhaust? Also, I think I'm going to use the Magnaflow universal cat instead of bothering with the stock cat since it is completely restrictive and really wont work unless they really f up my exhaust.

If they don't visually inspect the truck and ONLY smog it, the vehicle should pass with or without the cat if its in good running condition. With the VGT, EGR and 4 valves per cylinder (and reasonably decent calibration) the 6.0 just doesn't put out a hell of alot of particulate and NOx to begin with.

Gut the cat, cut 4 inch holes in the end, cut it in half, and weld it over the pipe that is there. That way it will pass visual inspection if they look, but it is only a hollow hull.

I have an o6 DuraMax I pulled the stock exhaust system (cat, muffler and pipes) and installed an off road 4" dual from magnaflow" WITH NO MUFFLER! That's right, STRAIGHT THRU EXHAUST!!! WHAT A SETUP and I would not do it any other way! bumped me to 400 HP and 700 fp of torque.......I live in The commie state of confusion "California" and I will do the gutted cat and weld to pipe deal when it comes time.....Screw the EPA!!
