Working on my 05 f550 going after a no start either hot or cold, i figured i'd take the turbo apart while waiting for parts. I did have an underboost code a little bit ago, but isn't one now.
Upon dissasembly i found the unison ring to be stuck to the turbine side. It pried up easily enough. The vanes all moved somewhat easily. I cleaned all the parts and noticed that the unison ring has a small groove worn in it where the cam pin is, basically the size of the pin. How much wear is too much, I'm planning on replacing the unison ring. Also there is slight pitting on the turbine side. How much is too much, should i just get a new turbo?
The new ring will be coated, no matter the condition of your old one go ahead and replace it. Where is the pitting, on the wheel or housing, housing is no problem.
This is my first post but I have a 2004 F-250 6.0 and wanted to get your opinion on whether or not I should replace the Unison ring. I took the turbo apart due to it sticking (it was carboned up) and noticed the unison ring is a little worn where the actuator goes, but wasn't sure how much is too much wear. Before I bought a new one I wanted to get some opinions.
You are at a crossroad and how many miles you have on the turbo would determine the best resolve. You can cheap out and just replace the ring or step it up with vanes also. Yes you have wear and it would be a good idea to replace.
Since it only takes about 10 minutes to roll one of these out from under the hood...... I would make sure to look a little farther than the ring.

Mine had 41,000miles on it and it was questionable. So I replaced it. They're only about $100-150. It's such a pain to get out, it's not worth screwing with.
With the shape that the slots are in I would also be checking the tabs and the actuator pin. If they show as
being Okay I would just replace the ring. However if they show wear then your going to be looking for a set
of vanes and I am not sure if you can get the actuator pin outside of a rebuild kit or not.
