I went and bought mercon v to change my tranfer case fluid and it said on the back of the bottle: "Do not use in transfer cases." And the parts guy at ford said thats all they use at the dealership. so i returned it.... Anyone else have this experience with mercon v? or what else could i use?
Was it Motorcraft brand? I think I remember seeing that too. As you know, Mercon ATF has been replaced by Mercon V and is backwards compatible, EXCEPT they say not to use it in T-cases. And, there is now a dedicated Motorcraft T-case fluid.
I solved the problem by just going with Mobil-1 synthetic ATF fluid. Has been fine for a couple of years now.

Here is the Motorcraft transmission fluids page, and it shows the T-case fluid, as well as the note you mentioned on the Mercon V. Motorcraft® Transmission Fluids
Yes it was motorcraft brand mercon v, bought it strait from the dealer, when i asked the parts guy he said thats all they use in the trucks they service....... Im not sure if he didnt know what he was talking about, or if they really use the wrong oil in their transfer cases... Oh mercon sp got replaced by mercon lv now too
I use amsoil synthetic transmission fluid in the transfer cases of both my trucks. It has been about 3 years and never a problem. I believe the synthetic fluid will make the transfer cases run at lower temperatures due to less friction.
