AC compressor noise
been a while since i have had to post, not necessarily because i'm out of problems, i've just taken a hiatus from fixing every problem.
So here's whats been going on:
The ac was recharged after an engine rebuild and worked great, still does!
However, the compressor is making a terrible grinding noise now whenever the air is turned on, not just the AC. Turning on the AC doesnt seem to make much of a difference from just having the dial set to COLD and the fan on.
Does this noise indicate bad bearings in the pulley? Compressor need replacing?
Also, when i set it to AC or AC MAX, the air will come out for face vents, and then alternate to the windshield vents... where that cold air does me no good!
i dont remember it behaving like this. Why would it be doing this?
Thanks all!
Before condemning the A/C compressor I'd suggest you take the belt off and spin the idler pulley and self tensioners to see if there is any roughness to them. It may just be a situation where once there is a load on the pulleys the noise occurs. The only reason it seems related to the A/C is due to the load the compressor puts on the belt drive system. That would certainly be a less expensive fix than a new compressor.
